Personal Financial Planning (PFPL)

BComm Concentrations

The financial planning industry is dynamic, increasingly sophisticated and rewarding. This makes the industry an exciting, challenging and important place to work. Personal financial planning is essential to the security of individuals and families. Financial planning professionals provide expertise to individuals in matters related to taxes, investments, retirement, and estate planning.

The PFPL concentration in the Haskayne School of Business is accredited by the Financial Planning Standards Council (FP Canada - https://www.fpcanada.ca/) as a pathway to obtain the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation and the Qualified Associate Financial Planner (QAFP) designation. The concentration is designed to provide students with an understanding of the financial planning process, estate planning, insurance products, retirement planning, and employee benefits.

The University of Calgary is the only Canadian university to be designated a Global Center of Insurance Excellence (GCIE) by the International Insurance Society.

Students declaring a Concentration must take a required six courses. Please refer to the University of Calgary Calendar for a description of these courses and their prerequisites.

Requirements

Students must achieve a minimum grade of 'C' in:

  • FNCE 317
  • RMIN 317

Students much maintain a minimum grade of C- in all concentration courses after the above prerequisite courses.

Scholarships

Over two dozen industry-sponsored scholarships are available for PFPL concentrations.

Benefits Consultant

  • assist human resource departments of businesses to design and manage programs of group health insurance pensions and other employee benefits
  • market a corporation's employee base to potential providers of group insurance and pension services.

Financial Planner

  • help individuals and groups plan the use of their savings, income and investments
  • examine client's immediate and long-term financial situations
  • be familiar with legal restrictions and laws concerning retirement plans, tax shelters, insurance, and trusts

Investment Advisor

  • Advise clients on the products or services that suit their needs and objectives.
  • Monitor stock market and industry trends likely to affect clients' investments.
  • Meet with clients to discuss market and industry trends that affect clients’ investments

Note: Students may take RMIN 317 in later years of their degree. The specific ordering of the classes is not mandatory.

Association for Risk Management and Insurance (ARMI)
Members of the Association for Risk Management and Insurance (ARMI) are provided with professional networking and educational opportunities through organized events with industry professionals, alumni and faculty. Examples of events include: speaker nights, an annual career fair, and job shadowing days at various organizations. ARMI also provides opportunities for students to take on leadership positions and work with RMIN faculty, alumni and risk professionals.
