Rick George was appointed president and chief executive officer of Suncor Energy Inc. in 1991, and in the past 20 years has increased the firm's market capitalization from $983 million to $54 billion (over 5,000% increase). He has prepared a special presentation for Haskayne MBA students, identifying his secrets for effective leadership, and the importance of mentoring.
Rick was named "Outstanding CEO of the Year" in 1999 after leading a remarkable business turnaround at Suncor, Canadian Business Leader Award in 2000, an Officer of the Order of Canada in December 2007, inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame, and named Canadian Energy Person of the Year in 2011 by the Energy Council of Canada.
Rick served as chairman of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives from 2003 to 2006 and remains on its board of directors. He was a member of the North American Competitiveness Council (NACC) from 2006 to 2009, and was selected to serve as chair of the Canadian contingent of the NACC in 2008. In 2011, Rick was elected to the Board of Canadian Pacific Railway, and is a member of the Calgary Committee to End Homelessness in 2007 and chair of the 2008 Governor General's Canadian Leadership Conference.
