Management Information Systems


Victoria Mitchell is an Associate Professor in the Management of Information Systems at the Haskayne School. She obtained her PhD in MIS at Florida State University, where she also received an MBA concentrating in Health Care Administration, and a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Dr. Mitchell has a Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Development from Oakland University, and maintains certification as a registered nurse specializing in IT-enabled change.

Prior to joining the Haskayne School, Dr. Mitchell was on faculty at a number of prestigious business schools. She taught in the MBA program at the University of California, Irvine before joining the faculty at UCLA's Anderson School of Management. Dr. Mitchell began the MIS program at North Carolina State University, and again at the University of Washington, Tacoma. Preceding her appointment to the University of Calgary, she was on faculty at Ohio State University.

Dr. Mitchell's primary areas of expertise are information technology (IT) management, IT impacts, and organization design. She teaches a variety of MIS topics to a wide spectrum of students. At the undergraduate level she has taught Systems Analysis and Design, Accounting Information Systems, Introductory MIS courses, Decision Making, and Research Methods. At the MBA level she has taught Systems Analysis, Systems Design, Database, Introductory MIS, Technology and Change Management, IT in Healthcare, as well as IT Consulting. At the PhD level, her classes have focused on Information and Organization Design, Research Design, and IT-enabled Change. In Executive Education Dr. Mitchell has provided seminars in Enterprise IT Management and IT-enabled Redesign.

Dr. Mitchell continues to research IT-enabled change, technology management, and the use of IT in organization redesign particularly in the field of medicine. She is also investigating the reuse of intellectual property in IT innovation, incentives for IT personnel, and genetic engineering. Her research is published in a number of prominent journals, such as Management Science, MIS Quarterly, Decision Sciences, and Organization Science, among others. Her research appears in practitioner and academic books on reengineering, IS planning, and healthcare. Her work is regularly disseminated at international conferences in her field, and she is often invited to present her work at leading universities most recently UCLA, Michigan State University, and Tulane University.

Victoria has received a number of competitive grants for her work on IT-enabled redesign. Recently, she and Dr. Norm Archer of McMaster University received a SSHRC grant to assess process redesign metrics for IT-based projects.

Dr. Mitchell is currently an associate editor for the leading MIS journal, Information Systems Research. For several years, she also served on the editorial board for the International Conference on Information Systems. She continues to review for leading journals and conferences. During the summer terms from 1995 to 2000, Victoria was a visiting scholar at the University of British Columbia.
