Bio

Dr. J.R. Brent Ritchie holds a BSc as well as an MSc from Queen's University, and a PhD from the University of Western Ontario. He previously held teaching positions at l'Institut pour les Etudes des Methodes de Direction de l'Enterprise, Lausanne, Switzerland and at Université Laval, Québec before he came to the University of Calgary as assistant dean (Graduate Programs) in 1978. He was instrumental in the designation of the University of Calgary as a World Tourism Education and Research Centre in 1989. At the end of June 1994, he completed five year appointments as associate dean (Academic), (Research & Development), and (International Programs) in the Haskayne School of Business, and as director of the Division of International Business for the University's International Centre. In 1995, he became the inaugural holder of the University of Calgary's Professorship in Tourism Management.

Dr. Ritchie teaches at the graduate and undergraduate levels and is especially interested in the PhD program in Tourism Management.

His ongoing research interests include the study of travel destination images, tourism policy, planning and development, managing quality service in tourism, enhancing productivity and competitiveness in the industry and managing the tourism impact of such mega-events and attractions as the XV Olympic Winter Games and world expositions. His current active research focuses on destination vision management, and the development of Indices of Competitiveness, Sustainability and Progress for National and 'City State' destinations.
