Dr. Liena Kano joined the Haskayne School of Business in July 2013, after completing her PhD studies at Haskayne. In addition to her PhD from the University of Calgary, she holds an MBA (Dean’s List, Beta Gamma Sigma) from the University of Calgary and a BA (Honours) in Linguistics and Intercultural Communications from the University of Russia's Academy of Education.
Liena teaches courses in strategic management and international business both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Her research interests lie at the intersection of international business, strategic management, and entrepreneurship. Liena studies business phenomena such as family firm governance, emerging economy multinationals and global value chains, with a particular focus on micro-level dynamics of managerial behaviour that underlie complex international governance decisions. Liena’s work has been published in such premier journals as Journal of International Business Studies, California Management Review, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of World Business, Global Strategy Journal, Business History Review and other high-quality academic outlets. Liena serves on editorial review boards of the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Global Strategy Journal, Multinational Business Review and Management Organization Review. Her reviewing work has been recognized by several Best Reviewer awards. Liena is a former Alan M. Rugman Visiting Research Fellow at the Henley Business School, University of Reading, UK, and a current Chair of Strategic Management Society’s Global Strategy Interest Group.
Prior to earning her PhD, Liena enjoyed a dynamic career in strategy in a range of Canadian and international industry sectors, including Oil & Gas, technology, and banking. Her significant leadership and management experience has influenced her current research interests.
