Risk Management & Insurance


Dr. Norma Nielson has been a Professor in the Haskayne School of Business since July 1997 when she moved to Calgary to assume the duties of the industry-endowed Chair in Insurance and Risk Management.  She holds a B.S. in Mathematics and Business/Computer Science from Northwest Missouri State University and an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.  In 1979 she became the first woman with a fellowship from the S.S.Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education to earn her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.  Prior to joining Haskayne, Dr. Nielson spent twenty years in academic positions at Oregon State University, the University of Southern California, and Iowa State University.  At Haskayne, Norma teaches primarily the life insurance and employee benefits courses but is involved with curriculum design and program planning for all aspects of the program in risk management and insurance.

Norma's research has produced over fifty publications, including articles in such journals as the Journal of Risk and Insurance and the Journal of Pension Economics and Finance.  She has shared her expertise with policy makers through presentations at the C.D. Howe Institute, the Public Utilities Boards of Newfoundland and New Brunswick, the Alberta Automobile Rate Insurance Board and the Ontario Expert Pension Commission.  She has conducted research projects for the Property & Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation (PACICC), the Insurance Bureau of Canada and the Law Commission of Canada and serves as Director of the Risk Studies Centre.  She currently is leading the Financial Markets Regulation Program at the U of C’s School of Public Policy while maintaining an active research program that focuses on retirement income issues.
