Bio

Peter Bowal is a Professor of Law in the Business and Environment area at the Haskayne School of Business. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta, a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, and a Master of Laws in Comparative Law and Legal Philosophy from the University of Cambridge. In 1983 he underwent Articles of Clerkship with the Alberta Court of Appeal and was admitted to the Law Society of Alberta the same year.



Following several years of law practice and teaching, he started at the University of Calgary in 1991. He earned tenure in 1995 and was promoted to Full Professor of Law in 1998 in the Haskayne School of Business. His research and teaching led to a Killam Fellowship in 1999. In 2001-2002, Professor Bowal served as the Judicial Fellow to the Chief Justice of the United States in Washington, DC.

Peter’s primary field of research interest is employment law and whistleblowing, for which he has received several research grants, publications and awards.

Professor Bowal has published widely in Canadian and international law journals and numerous professional publications. In 22 years he has published 35 refereed articles in academic journals, 28 refereed conference proceedings, three book chapters, 124 professional articles, an online course, eight book reviews, received 13 research grants, two teaching development grants, seven travel grants, and has made 55 other invited academic presentations.

In 1994, Peter was the first and only faculty member at the University of Calgary to win all three levels of teaching awards in the same year. Peter has earned several teaching awards, including the Students Union Teaching Excellence Award, Most Outstanding Faculty Member, Graduate Teaching Award, Dean's Award for Research Excellence, Best Academic Paper Award.  In 2001, he won  the international Charles M. Hewitt Master Teacher Award, sponsored by the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, which recognizes the most effective teaching skill in the academy.

He is a former Vice-President and Treasurer, Consumers' Association of Canada, and the Canadian Representative to the United Nations in their Graduate Internship Program in Geneva. In 1998, he was a Canadian Fulbright Fellow to Arizona State University and in 2005 was the Fulbright Research Chair at Michigan State University. He served as a Presiding Justice of the Peace for Alberta for 11½ years conducting  bail hearings, issuing search warrants and warrants for arrest, and other judicial orders. Recently, for two years, he produced and hosted his own weekly radio talk show, called "LawTalk" on legal issues for the lay public.  He was the Corporate Secretary for the Make-A-Wish Foundation for Southern Alberta, and currently serves as the Chair of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Council, a member of the Municipal Government Board and the Alberta Health Professions Discipline Tribunal.
