Bio

Dr. Jones joined the faculty in June 1978 as an instructor in the accounting area and became a senior instructor in 1983 and an associate professor in 1998. He retired in June 2013.  He is a Chartered Accountant and has been a member of the Alberta Institute of Chartered Accountants since 1978.   He received his BSc and PhD from the University of Wales, and was a Postdoctoral Fellow both at the University of Texas at Austin and at the Royal Institution in London, UK.

He regularly taught intermediate and advanced financial accounting in the undergraduate program and financial accounting in the MBA program, but has also taught most of the undergraduate accounting courses.  He also taught in the faculty's Executive MBA program not only in Calgary, but also in Warsaw, Poland and in Čelákovice, Czech Republic.

Dr Jones's research focused on behavioral aspects of accounting, particularly the effect of students’ cognitive styles on their use of hypertext learning tools, and has published in such journals as Contemporary Accounting Research and Accounting Education – an International Journal.  With another colleague he has been awarded continuing grants over the years from the Chartered Accountants' Education Foundation of Alberta for the development of other interactive computer-based accounting programs.  He has thrice won the Chartered Accountants’ Education Foundation’s Teaching Award -- which earned him the Chartered Accountants' Education Foundation's Triple Crown Award in 2011 (making him the first University of Calgary winner of this award) -- and he has also been awarded the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he has been active in several administrative capacities, including his role as the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Program) from 1986 until 1994, and was the accounting area chairman from 1994 to 1998. He was also the copy editor of Contemporary Accounting Research from its inception in 1984 to 1989.
