On November 24, a group of Haskayne MBA students experienced firsthand how a group of small business owners are preparing to take Calgary’s business scene by storm.
Through a partnership with Momentum, a not-for-profit organization that supports low-income Calgarians, 12 members from the Haskayne MBA Society had the opportunity to consult with participants from Momentum’s business owner programs.
More than 15 business owners presented their business challenges to the team of Haskayne students, citing issues such as marketing their new venture, securing funding, and building clientele.
“Each Momentum participant brought unique and challenging questions to our team of MBA students, but what was universal among all of the participants was their entrepreneurial passion," said Jill Fink, MBA Society Community Outreach Manager. "This is a group of people who have learned the skills, built the business plan and are focused on improving their lives and community through their business”
While the participants walked away with business solutions and new ideas, MBA Society members were able to put the knowledge and skills they learn into the classroom into practice. “This event was a great example of the impact academia and community can have by working together," said Fink.
As a result of the success of the first event, the Haskayne MBA Society is organizing a second event with Momentum in the new year. To learn more about Momentum and how it is helping build a sustainable livelihood for Calgarians, visit www.momentum.org.
