On the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Haskayne School of Business is hosting a special Insight Lecture by Chief Clarence Louie, Chief of the Osoyoos Indian Band. In his talk – Business Leadership, Risk-Taking, and Entrepreneurship – Chief Louie will speak on entrepreneurship, taking risks, education, and business leadership in the context of First Nations communities. This presentation will also provide insights into the importance of mentorship and pride in community.
Chief Clarence Louie was first elected as Chief of the Osoyoos Indian Band, part of the Okanagan Nation in south central British Columbia, in 1984. Since then, Chief Louie has consistently emphasized economic development as a means to improve his people's standard of living. Under his direction, the Band has become a multi-faceted corporation that owns and manages nine businesses and employs hundreds of people. In 1998, the Osoyoos Indian Band Development Corporation was formed to manage and provide strategic direction to the existing businesses and as well as seek out new economic opportunities.
This presentation is made possible through the TD Aboriginal Education Enhancement Program at the Haskayne School of Business. The TD-funded program focuses on supporting aboriginal students in the business school, particularly in their first year, through academic support, peer involvement, and mentorship.

“This seminar will provide a unique opportunity for our students and mentors to connect and offer them a chance to learn more about the values of mentorship from an insightful speaker,” says Lisa Huston, coordinator of the Haskayne Career Centre’s Mentorship Program supported through Enbridge Inc., a partner in today's presentation.
Dr. David Lertzman will host a Q & A following the presentation. Dr. Lertzman is an assistant professor of Environmental Management and Sustainable Development at the Haskayne School of Business. His work with indigenous peoples for over 20 years puts him at the forefront of efforts to bridge traditional ecological knowledge and Western science in sustainable development.
