There were big cheques and even bigger grins as six teams of entrepreneurs collected their winnings at the Energy New Venture Competition Tuesday afternoon. The entrepreneurs — including an art school dropout, a UCalgary grad student in mathematics, and 35-year oil and gas veterans — spent the day pitching their ventures at the fourth annual competition hosted by the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Innovate Calgary.
Alberta is experiencing an economic disruption like no other. Our recovery will demand leaders who are critical thinkers and actively seeking out new solutions to ongoing challenges. Success in real estate will be dependent upon understanding increasingly complex operating environments, from addressing issues of vacancy rates and downsized workforces, to retrofitting established communities and identifying ideal mixed uses.
With the downturn in the economy and the need for economic diversification, an initiative to foster emerging businesses in Calgary developed by the University of Calgary’s own students could not come soon enough.
Reacting successfully to a global industry is one thing. But creating a global industry? That’s another gig entirely.
