Here are a few definitions that may help:
Dean: The head of a university faculty or department.
Associate Dean: A senior administrator in a university faculty or department.
Professor: A academic staff member of the highest rank in a college or university.
Emeritus/Emerita Faculty member: An academic staff member who retires in good standing. (An assoc. prof can also be emeritus; emerita is female)
Associate professor: An academic ranking immediately below full professor.
Assistant professor: An academic ranking immediately below an associate professor.
Senior instructor: An academic staff member whose primary role is instruction.
Instructor: An academic ranking just below Senior Instructor.
Adjunct Faculty member: A part-time academic staff member hired on a contractual basis.
Sessional instructor: An instructor hired on a contractual basis each semester
