Dr. Jess Chua has been a faculty member of the Haskayne School of Business since 1979 and is a Professor of Finance and the holder of the Professorship in Family Business Governance. He currently teaches new venture finance to both BComm and MBA students and introductory financial management to executive MBA students. Jess received his PhD in Finance from the University of Michigan, his MS in chemical engineering from Syracuse University, and his BS in chemical engineering from the University of San Carlos.
His two fields of research, reflecting his appointments, are family business governance and new venture financing. He has published three books, two monographs, and over ninety papers in academic and professional journals.
Dr. Chua is an editor of Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, one of the two top academic journals devoted to family business research. He is listed in Who’s Who in Canada and Who’s Who in Canadian Business. His research has received awards from the Family Firm Institute, the Administrative Science Association of Canada, and the Financial Management Association. For his contribution to management practice through his teaching, research, and consulting, he received the 1999 National Post Leaders in Management Education Award. In 2002, he received the MBA Society Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
In addition to teaching and research, he has served the Haskayne School in various administrative roles and on the boards of several professional organizations plus energy and high-tech companies.
