Ryan is currently the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs) in addition to his normal academic position of Associate Professor of Risk Management and Insurance. He has been teaching at the Haskayne School of Business since 2000 and received his Bachelors in Business Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and PhD from the University of Georgia.
Ryan teaches the introductory course in risk management and insurance, as well as senior level courses in life insurance and corporate risk management for undergraduate students. He has also taught in the MBA, EMBA, and executive education programs in the areas of corporate and enterprise risk management.
Ryan’s areas of research interest include the implementation of enterprise risk management, internationalization by insurance companies, health care reform, and risk management education. Ryan’s work has been published in the Journal of Risk and Insurance, the Risk Management and Insurance Review, and the Journal of Financial Education. He has also published in numerous trade journals including Risk Management, Canadian Insurance, and Canadian Underwriter. Awards and achievements include winning the Les B. Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award (with Anne Kleffner and Norma Nielson) and the President’s Award both from the American Risk and Insurance Association. He is a past winner of both the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award and the Superior Service Award for Faculty in the Haskayne School of Business. He was also the professor for the first Shantou Global Leadership and Innovation Program offered by the University of Calgary.
Ryan is currently serving on the Boards of both the Southern Risk and Insurance Association and the Western Risk and Insurance Association, regional organizations of risk management and insurance academics. He is also an active member of the American Risk and Insurance Association and has chaired and served on numerous committees for that organization. Ryan is also a member of the Risk and Insurance Management Society, Southern Alberta Chapter and has made presentations at a number of trade conferences in both Canada and the United States.
