Application step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Meet Minimum Requirements

GMAT or GRE Score
In order to qualify for application, you need to write the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Gradate Record Exam (GRE). Your score should be, at minimum, 650 on the GMAT (or equivalent on the GRE). It is recommended that you place above the 85th percentile on overall test scores.

GPA
You should have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.5 on a four point scale from your last two years of university work;

TOEFL
If English is not your first language, you must obtain a score of at least 600 (written) / 250 (computer) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A score of 7.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is also accepted. International students are required to submit academic papers, reports, or articles (published or submitted for publication into journals) as proof of their writing ability.

NOTE: As a graduate program within The University of Calgary, the PhD in Management is administered under the aegis of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Any specific Haskayne School of Business rules and regulations must be interpreted within the scope of those set and administered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Step 2: Consider Potential Faculty Supervisors

A good supervisory match is critical to your success in the PhD program. Search the academic faculty directory to see who might fit will with your research interests. If you find a potential supervisor who has similiar research interests, please include their name on your Quick Assessment Form.  

Step 3: Submit Quick Assessment Form

If you meet the minimum requirements and have a supervisor / area of study in mind, fill out our Quick Click Assessment Form. We will review it and let you know within one month whether you qualify for application.  Please note: an invitation to apply does not guarantee admission to the program.

Step 4: Apply

If you have been notified that you qualify for application, you can apply on-line. If you want to begin your program in September, you must apply by January 15th of the same year. If you wish to be considered for January admission, you must apply by August 15th if you are an International Student, or by October 15th of the previous year, if you are a Canadian or Permanent Resident of Canada.

The deadline for submitting scholarship applications is  January 15.

Step 5: Submit Required Documentation

Along with your Statement of Interest, send two original copies of transcripts, an official English translation, and degree certificates. Applications to the program must be accompanied by TWO letters of reference along with the reference form. Each letter of reference MUST be sealed in its own proper envelope and signed by the referee on top of the seal, or a copy can be emailed from a university or company account (letters of reference from gmail or hotmail accounts will not be accepted). The application has room for three references, however, only two are REQUIRED. Submit examination scores from GMAT or GRE as well as TOEFL or IELTS (if English is not your first language).  

NOTE: Applicants to the Haskayne graduate program do not need to submit extra references for scholarship purposes. The two references used for admission may be used toward the scholarship competition of the same year.

Step 6: Pay Non-Refundable Application Fee

Pay the application fee ($100 for Canadian applicants, or $130 for International applicants). Application fees are non-refundable.
