Diane Bischak

Research Director/Faculty Operations and Supply Chain Management

Why the PhD Program in the Haskayne School of Business is important?

The Haskayne PhD Program teaches students how to do research carefully (or it should!). In these days of retractions of published research, overblown research claims, and unethical research procedures uncovered and reported in the newspaper, it is important for students to learn how to construct careful studies, avoid bias, and distinguish research evidence from the lack thereof.

Why you want to supervise doctoral students?

I have found that supervising doctoral students is a wonderful way to contribute to their growth as scholars and as people. It also helps me to keep sharp myself.

Faculty Operations and Supply Chain Management

Why the PhD Program in the Haskayne School of Business is important?

The PhD program helps faculty to develop rigorous and high impact research, and to keep abreast of recent developments in management science.

Why you want to supervise doctoral students?

PhD students can be very good collaborators, propose new ideas and methods, and help disseminate our research.

Research Director/Faculty Strategy and Global Management

Why the PhD Program in the Haskayne School of Business is important?

The PhD Program is the heart and the soul of the business school. It is here that extraordinarily bright, young people devote several years of their life to furthering knowledge in the management sciences, with a view to advance the practice of management. It is in the PhD program that new management ideas are developed and come to fruition. It is in the PhD program that we separate entertaining but worthless fads popularized by so-called business gurus, from valuable ideas that can truly guide and enlighten managers. Only work at the PhD level can contribute to solving the great managerial puzzles of our time: How to improve the information processing capacity of the organization? How to make individuals, teams, sub-units and the organization as a whole more reliable? How to create and capture true economic value in a sustainable fashion?

Why you want to supervise doctoral students?

I have successfully supervised 19 PhD students to date. Nothing has given me more professional satisfaction than to see PhD students develop into distinguished scholars, commanding deep knowledge of their chosen subject matter and able to articulate in a credible fashion a way forward for managers facing the difficult challenge of achieving the survival, growth and profitability of their organizations. PhD graduates constitute the most reliable, knowledge-based resource we can create to guarantee our society's sustainable future; supervising PhD students is therefore the best investment I can possibly make.
