Ethics Review Checklist

Checklist of required information for ethics review of course projects

Each application for approval of a course project involving data collection with humans in the public domain should include the following information:

Course name and number:

  • Number of students

Description of the project:

  • What is the purpose of the project?
  • What information is the student expected to collect?
  • How is the student expected to collect the information?
  • Will the project be done by individual students or groups of students?  How many students will be in a group?
  • What is the final date for data collection or when is the project due?
  • How much weight does the project have in the calculation of the final grade?

Instruction of the ethics of  data collection:

  • How you will review the ethical principles related to the data collection with the students?

Recruitment and consent procedures:

  • How will students recruit individuals to participate?
  • What information will students give to potential participants?
  • How will informed consent be obtained? (You should attached a informed consent template)
  • How will privacy/confidentiality issues be managed?
  • How will participants be informed of the final results?

Code of conduct:

  • A Code of Conduct must be developed for the students to sign, and should be modified to fit the specific context.
