Teaching Assistant roles

To become a Teaching Assistant, you must have:

  • Good understanding of the materials taught in the course you are subjected to teach
  • Completed the course with a reasonably high grade (B+ or higher, but depends on each faculty).
  • Willingness to help others in need.
  • Show exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Enthusiasm for course materials and interest in the industry.

Responsibilities

The general responsibilities as a Teaching Assistant include:

  • Proctor exams, including setting up exams, answering student’s questions during the exams, and collecting them
  • Hold tutorials for assignments and general questions on course material.
  • Mark assignments and exams.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and accountability for scheduled tutorials and other TA-related commitments.
  • Attend in-class lectures and engage students in an interactive learning experience.

Hiring process

The hiring process for Teaching Assistants differs from faculty to faculty. Generally speaking, course instructors approach students who they see fit the role or students approach them with an interest of becoming a Teaching Assistant. It is an informal process with much flexibility. If you meet the requirements and are wishing to become a Teaching Assistant, feel free to approach the course coordinator of your faculty of interest.

Once you become a Teaching Assistant, you have great opportunity to:

  • Make extra money while on campus.
  • Meet and network with other Teaching Assistants and course instructors.
  • Engage with students attending the Haskayne School of Business.
  • Learn the course materials thoroughly, broadening your academic knowledge.
