Getting to Calgary
The YYC Calgary International Airport is one of Canada’s largest airports and welcomes millions of visitors to Calgary each year. The airport is located in northeast Calgary and is approximately 30 minutes by car from the University of Calgary.
Transportation to and from the airport:
Taxis charge a base rate between $3.80 and $4.50. Most services have online and mobile booking apps and most cabs accept credit, debit, and cash.

Ride sharing is also a convenient mode of transportation with several organizations offering the digital service in Calgary, including Uber and Lyft.

Navigating Calgary is easy with many transportation options to suit your time exploring the city including Taxi, Uber, Calgary Transit bus or CTrain, Calgary’s light-rail metro system.

Purchasing CTrain tickets
You must acquire a ticket to board the CTrain (or a Calgary Transit bus) throughout most of the city with the exception of the city center, which is a free-fare CTrain zone. If you fail to purchase a ticket, or travel with an expired ticket, you may receive a penalty from a Peace Officer.
One-use tickets cost $3.60 per person and are valid for 90 minutes after activation.
If you plan to spend an entire day traveling throughout Calgary, consider purchasing the Day Pass for $11.25.
Please note:
All train stations, trains, and buses are wheelchair accessible and feature accommodations for deaf persons and persons who are blind or visually impaired. For more information, please see the Calgary Transit website.
Buses do not stop at every station along their route, only at requested stops. To request a stop, press one of the red “Stop” buttons or pull on the yellow cord.
An easy way to purchase tickets is through the Calgary Transit My Fare app:
- Install the My Fare app on your mobile device (available through the Google Play Store and the App Store)
- Select “Buy Tickets” and “Adult”
- To purchase a one-use ticket, select “Adult Single Ticket”
- To purchase multiple one-use tickets, switch to the “Multiple” tab and choose the number of “Adult Single Ticket” you would like to buy
- To purchase a Day Pass, select “Adult Day Pass”
- Pay by card, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, or with ApplePay
- Tickets will appear in the “Ticket Wallet” section of the app
- Before boarding, click on an “Inactive” ticket in your “Ticket Wallet” and “Activate Ticket” (for this step, you do not need a Wi-Fi or data connection)
- On buses, additionally scan your ticket on the onboard scanner
- If requested, show the ticket to a Calgary Transit Peace Officer
You can acquire a one-use ticket or Day Pass through vendor machines on CTrain platforms:
- Locate a vendor machine, usually at the entrance(s) of a Ctrain station (look for a tall, white box with a blue-framed screen and a sign saying “Tickets”)
- To purchase a one-use ticket, select “Adult Single Ticket”
- To purchase multiple on-use tickets, select “Multiple Customers” in the upper right corner of the screen and choose the number of “Adult Single Ticket” you would like to buy
- To purchase a Day Pass, select “Adult Day Pass”
- Pay by cash (CAD only) or by card, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Interac
- Tickets are active immediately, meaning you can board as soon as you receive the ticket
- On buses, additionally show your ticket to the bus driver
- If requested, show the ticket to a Calgary Transit Peace Officer
