50th Anniversary
50 years of impact, one weekend to remember

Over a packed three days, April 29 to May 1, the University of Calgary family came together to celebrate community and to mark the official launch of Energize: The Campaign for Eyes High. From our employee recognition awards, spirited open house and high-energy evening festivities, to our 2016 Lecture of a Lifetime, University District street-naming celebration, and our first-ever Alumni Weekend, thousands reflected on the legacy of our past and kick-started the next half-century.

Sisters Transform Ways for Alumni to Give Back

Almost three-time UCalgary alumni, sisters Safia Nathoo, BSc’07, MSc’09, MBA’14, and Nabeela Nathoo, BSc’09, PhD’14, are changing the image of “scholarship donors.”

The Nathoo Family Graduate Scholarship, worth $2,000, is open to students registered full-time in a thesis-based graduate program in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. And in keeping with the sisters’ own dedication to community work, the scholarship seeks to reward grad students also involved in leadership and volunteer activities.

2016 Calgary Business Hall of Fame Laureates

Honorary degree holders Mac Van Wielingen, LLD’14, and Ron Southern, LLD’76, were announced as the 2016 inductees into the Calgary Business Hall of Fame alongside Ross Glen and Cal Wenzel.

W.E. (Bill) Richards Classroom Reception – May 5th

This event celebrated the generous support of 23 donors (including Haskayne alumni) who came together to enable Haskayne’s first active learning classroom—an innovative, technology-enhanced learning space—and to create a lasting tribute to their friend and colleague, Bill Richards.

Haskayne Adventure Leadership Gift Announcement – May 6th

This donor recognition event celebrated Hal Kvisle, MBA’82, and his generosity - $3 million gift to support leadership adventure education programming delivered by the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL). Over 100 key stakeholders were treated to interactive leadership activities and demonstrations in this first major gift announcement after the public launch of the Energize campaign.

Lisa Costello, BComm’06, CA, CPA

As CEO of Neal’s Yard Remedies Canada, Lisa has built two retail storefronts, an e-commerce business, and a wholesale distribution business. Lisa is passionate about health, wellness, and environmental sustainability. She also believes in giving back to the community and sits on the Board of Directors for REAP and the 4th Street BRZ, in addition to volunteering her time at the Rotary Club of Calgary, the Calgary Food Bank, and mentoring students.

Christy Gellert, BComm’10, CPA, CMA

Financial Reporting Accountant at ARC Resources Ltd., Christy prepares internal and external financial statements, and regularly writes about ARC’s commitment to the community. She is an active volunteer with Junior Achievement’s Company Program where she helps high school students pursue entrepreneurial ventures. Christy was recently awarded the prestigious 2015 Certified Managerial Accountant Alberta Gold Medal for having the highest combined mark on the CMA Entrance Exam and the Strategic Leadership Program.
