Skunkworks Innovation Cooperative

Submitted by kjcoyle on Wed, 08/31/2016 - 1:17pm

You are invited to be a part of a group of innovators come together to combine talent and ambition to talk about discovery, invention and innovation and what that looks like for our faculty.

The Skunkworks Cooperative serves as a connection point for students, staff, and faculty on the University of Calgary campus; we educate and promote cross-faculty events and initiatives surrounding innovation.

One goal of the group is to link current activities in the Faculty of Science, the Schulich School of Engineering and the Haskayne School of Business to build stronger connections with Innovate Calgary and local, national and international business communities.

Join the Skunkworks mailing list.

For the month of April, Skunkworks meetings will be held in Earth Sciences 553 from 12-2PM every Wednesday.

Activities

Innovation Clinics

If you are an early stage innovator and would like to present your project (business, technology, etc) during our skunkworks meeting, please let us know at least a week in advance. Pick a clinic time and send details about your presentation to slarter@ucalgary.ca that includes:

  • An overview of your business or technical venture
  • Key milestones you've achieve thus far
  • What you need help with from the Skunkworks group

Why participate?

Our skunkworks network includes enablers (people and organizations who can provide support, advice and even resources) and many serial university entrepreneurs and innovators, in both technical and social innovation areas. We like nothing more than discussing novel and new ideas and we want to help. Several startups at the University of Calgary have found team members through the skunkworks meetings and this new development merely structures and supports our activities in a more coherent manner.

Lab Crawls

Skunkworks also plans lab crawls, which are tours around the University to learn about the amazing innovation and research activity that is going on in corridors, labs and workshops, in not so distant departments and faculties that too few know about.

To offer a lab crawl session for your area, contact slarter@ucalgary.ca, kevan.coyle@haskayne.ucalgary.ca,  alexander.whalley@ucalgary.ca, rosstj@ucalgary.ca with:

  • Overview of your lab's focus
  • Location
  • Proposed date for lab crawl

Why participate?

Lab crawls create an opportunity for innovators from across the university to showcase their work and to talk about why it's important. By bringing together innovators from across campus, we hope to build relationships between innovators from several faculties, as this creates the foundation for new innovations.
