What’s new with RMIN?
Hello Risk Management and Insurance (RMIN) grads! We know it’s been some time since we’ve been able to connect. It’s our sincere hope that you’ve been staying well during these challenging times. While we may not be able to gather in person like we usually do, we still wanted to update you on our area and the Haskayne School of Business.
The Risk Management and Insurance group have been busy over the last year engaging with our advisory board, including our new alumni co-chairs Andrew Barker and Nikki Latter, RMIN students and alumni in developing a new strategic plan for the next five years. This process has identified two primary initiatives that are our focus.
The first is a refresh of the Risk Management concentrations. We’re drafting a proposal that will move away from the three distinct concentrations (RMIN, RMIF, and PFPL) and become a broader, less prescriptive concentration called RISK. The concentration will have different streams such as corporate risk management, risk analytics and sustainability risk management. This approach will help address the evolving needs of employers and also provide students with the flexibility to choose courses that align with their interests and their career goals.
The second major initiative is to revitalize the Risk Studies Centre (RSC) and develop it as a Centre for Excellence to provide thought leadership in risk management and also help to create and sustain unparalleled learning experiences for risk management students. We envision that the RSC can facilitate multi-disciplinary research on risk assessment and risk management, with the purpose of improving the management of risk by businesses and society.
Over the last year and a half, we’ve missed the opportunity to catch up with our alumni at our annual fall networking night and the March alumni lunch. The University of Calgary plans to have in-person classes this fall, and as guidelines are developed for hosting in-person events, we will consider whether it is feasible to host a fall alumni networking event. Now that things are opening up again, we hope to see many of you in 2022.
I wish each of you a fun and restful summer, and want to remind you that if you’re not already connected to the RMIN LinkedIn In group, please join us here. You can also connect with Haskayne on Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook.
