Haskayne Professional Mentorship Program

Submitted by yayoi.moriguchi on Wed, 03/18/2015 - 3:38pm

The Haskayne Professional Mentorship Program gives students the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals through six one-on-one meetings between September and April. Students are provided with self-assessments and required orientation in advance of program launch so that they are prepared to think about their goals and come to meetings with their mentor well prepared. The program hosts events through the year offered jointly to mentors and mentees as well as events for only mentors or only mentees. A research project runs alongside the program, providing recommendations on best practices in many areas of the program.

Become a Mentee

Mentoring can be a crucial tool to help you grow as a business professional and transition from university life to the business world. A mentorship relationship provides you with an invaluable opportunity to work closely with a person already working in your future field, possibly increasing your career opportunities and accelerating your personal development. Your mentor can act as sounding board, provide impartial advice, share career experiences and help build your professional network.

Requirements

A successful mentorship relationship is dependent on the amount of time and effort that a mentor and mentee put into creating a great experience. Mentees are expected to meet with their mentors at least six times throughout the academic year (September – April). Mentees are the driver of the relationship; they are expected to plan and organize meeting dates with their mentors. Six meetings is only a minimum requirement; we encourage additional touch-in with your mentors. Your mentorship meetings can include:

  • Lunch meetings
  • Attending a Haskayne School of Business speaker series
  • Workplace visits
  • Phone calls/video conferencing
  • Job shadowing

Please note, registering for the program is not a guarantee that you will be matched with a mentor.

BComm students: Early registration open until May 15, 2017. Register here.

MBA students: Register here.

Become a Mentor

Becoming a mentor is about helping the next generation of business professionals prepare for the transition from university to the business world. At the same time, you will develop your own skills to help you become a better manager and leader.

As a Haskayne mentor, you will have access to mentor-only events, networking seminars, and other Haskayne School of Business functions.

Requirements

A successful mentorship relationship is dependent on the amount of time and effort that a mentor and mentee put into creating a great experience. Mentors are expected to meet with their mentees at least six times throughout the academic year (September – April). Of course this is only a minimum requirement; we encourage additional touch-in with your mentees. Your mentorship meetings can include:

  • Lunch meetings
  • Speaker seminars
  • Workplace visits
  • Phone calls/video conferencing
  • Job shadowing

We hope to partner students with professionals who can offer advice and guidance as our students prepare to transition from university to the business world. As such, mentors should hold an undergraduate degree and have been working professionally for at least five years.
