Our History
Ten years ago, the Hunter Family made a transformative investment in the Haskayne School of Business. This gift funded the establishment of the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, a centre that leverages and strengthens the entrepreneurial spirit abundant in Alberta. At the time, there was much debate over whether or not entrepreneurial thinking could be taught; the Hunter Centre is proof that indeed it can be.
What began as an initiative to provide an educational environment that supports and encourages the pursuit of entrepreneurship at the Haskayne School has sparked a movement of entrepreneurial thinking and innovation across the University of Calgary community. Bolstered by further investment from the Hunter Family, the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking launched in 2017 and the Hunter Student Commons, a purpose-built space on the University of Calgary main campus opened in Fall 2022.
Given the prevalence of entrepreneurial thinking and innovation initiatives under the Hunter name across campus, the Haskayne School of Business and the Hunter Family Foundation have decided to rename the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation to the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The centre will remain firmly rooted at the heart of the Haskayne School’s entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives.

UCalgary Entrepreneurship
In 2017, the Hunter Family Foundation built on the success of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation through the creation of the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking, a new campus-wide initiative which serves various operating units and faculties such as engineering, science, social work, nursing, medicine and more through a hub-and-spoke model.
