Karen Dawson - Adjunct Associate Professor, Leadership and Change

Karen Dawson is an adjunct associate professor at the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary. Karen is a facilitator, consultant and certified executive coach, focusing on organizational leadership and development.

Grounded in theatre training (University of Alberta) as an actor and director, Karen incorporates the fundamental skills of improvisation and theatre in her work with clients. She is particularly interested in the intersection of creative processes and organizational change. Karen taught flying with the Canadian Military Cadet program and learned the importance of skillful practice and adaptive performance.

Dawson holds a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University and a PhD from Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Specializing in leadership development through her company Create Now Inc., Karen teaches at The Banff Centre on the leadership development faculty, works with a broad range of corporate clients, and is associate faculty with Royal Roads University Masters of Environment & Management program. Karen likes to run (very slowly), read books (all kinds), and she parents (delightful) young adults. Karen lives in Calgary, Alberta.

Jim Dewald - Dean, Haskayne School of Business, Associate Professor, Strategy and Global Management

Jim has a B.Sc. (Civil Engineering) and an MBA from the University of Alberta, and a PhD from the University of Calgary. Prior to entering academe, Jim was active in the Calgary business community, including positions as President & CEO of Walker Newby & Partners Inc. (engineering consulting), President & CEO of Hopewell Residential Communities Inc., and President & CEO of Stone Creek Resorts Inc.

To take full advantage of the combination of business experience and academic achievements, Jim focuses his teaching on MBA, EMBA, and Executive Education programs, including the Directors Education Program. From 2009 to 2012, Jim was Associate Dean (Graduate Programs) at the Haskayne School of Business. Jim is recognized as a business leader who can provide an effective bridge between strategy theory and on-the-ground practice.

Effective July 1, 2012, Jim is Director of Real Estate and Entrepreneurship Studies. This new initiative includes undergraduate and graduate courses in real estate development, investment, and entrepreneurship, a research program, and community engagement activities.

Although relatively new to academic research, Jim has two books, two book chapters, and several articles to his credit, including publications in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and the Journal of Management Studies. He has received scholarship and research awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the United States Association of Entrepreneurship and Small Business (USASBE), the Real Property Association of Canada(RePac), the Alberta Real Estate Foundation (AREF), the Journal of Small Business Management, and the University of Calgary. In addition, he was awarded the MBA Society’s Outstanding Teaching and Learning Award for the 2007/2008 academic year.

Jim is a Trustee at Boardwalk REIT (TSX: BEI.UN), and a Director of the West Campus Development Corporation and the Real Estate Development Institute. For the past 30 years he has been on many boards and committees, including the Board membership in SAIT (Deputy Chair), the Calgary Housing Company (Vice-Chair), HomeCo (Chair), Prairie Cache Resources Ltd. (ASE listed), Alberta Global Forum, and the Urban Development Institute (Chair). He was appointed to many civic and provincial committees, including imagineCALGARY Steering Committee, Go-Plan Citizens Coordinating Committee, Sustainable Suburbs Roundtable, Calgary Regional Planning Committee, and the Bow Valley Public Advisory Committee.

Loren Falkenberg - Associate Dean, Human Resources and Organizational Dynamics

Loren Falkenberg has been a faculty member in the Haskayne School of Business for more than 20 years. She teaches business ethics and negotiations. She has actively consulted in the area of CSR; and worked with Talisman on their activities in the Sudan and in developing their first CSR report. She developed the CSR guidelines for the Latin American Petroleum Producers. She has also conducted seminars for pipeline companies, and spoken at numerous professional seminars on CSR. She is regularly contacted by the media for comment on ethical issues, including the CBC, Globe and Mail, and the Calgary Herald.

Loren has published in the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Perspectives, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management and California Management Review. As well, she is currently the Section Editor for Case Studies in the Journal of Business Ethics.

Loren has won six awards for best papers published in journals or presented at conferences. As well, she has written a textbook, and published chapters in edited books. Her particular research interests are in developing cases examining ethical and social responsibility issues, decision making by senior leaders, and exploring the relationships between companies and not-for-profit organizations Loren is an active contributor to not-for-profit organizations. She currently is the Chair of the Board of Directors of Calgary Meals on Wheels, Chair of Parent Council at her children's school and volunteers with Inn From the Cold.

Rob Handfield - Adjunct Professor, Supply Chain Management

Rob Handfield is an Adjunct Professor at the Haskayne School of Business, the Bank of America University Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management at North Carolina State University, and Director of the Supply Chain Resource Cooperative (http://scm.ncsu.edu). He also serves as Faculty Lead for the Manufacturing Analytics group within the International Institute of Analytics, and is on the Faculty for Operations Research Curriculum at NC State University.

Handfield is the Consulting Editor of the Journal of Operations Management, one of the leading supply chain management journals in the field, and is the author of several books on supply chain management, the most recent being Biopharmaceutical Supply Chains, Supply Market Intelligence, Supply Chain Re-Design and Introduction to Supply Chain Management (Prentice Hall, 1999, 25,000 copies sold, and translated into Chinese, Japanese, and Korean). He has co-authored textbooks for MBA and undergraduate classes including Purchasing and Supply Chain Management 5th revision (with Robert Monczka) and Operations and Supply Chain Management 2nd revision (with Cecil Bozarth).

Handfield received the Emerald Citation of Excellence award in 2011 and again in 2013, for two articles, each cited as one of the top 50 articles from the 300 top management publications worldwide that have had a proven impact since they were published. In 2009, he was nominated as an Honorary Fellow of Contract & Commercial Management (FCCM) by the International Association of Commercial and Contract Management. This honours is bestowed on individuals who have made exceptional contributions in the field of contracting and commercial management. His blog, Supply Chain View from the Field (http://scm.ncsu.edu/blog) was listed as the #3 top business school blogs by OnlineMBA.com. Handfield is regularly quoted and has published op ed pieces, and is quoted in blogs and global news media such as the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, Spend Matters, Microsoft Live, Ariba Live, Inc., CIO, CFO, the Supply Chain Management Review, and other media.

Handfield has consulted with over 25 Fortune 500 companies, including Biogen Idec, GlaxoSmithKline, CR Bard, Boston Scientific, Delphi, Chevron, British Petroleum, Chevron Phillips, Lyondell Chemical, Conoco Phillips, Federal Express, SAP, and others. He has published more than 100 articles in top management journals including California Management Review, Sloan Management Review, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Journal of Operations Management, and Decision Sciences.

Derek Hassay - Assistant Professor of Marketing

Derek is an Assistant Professor of Marketing . He joined HSB in 2000 following five years as a faculty member at Lakehead University. He holds a BBA from the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton), an MBA from McMaster University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba.

Derek teaches sales management to undergraduates, marketing management to both MBA and EMBA students and a variety of executive education courses. His teaching and research interests are in the area of relationship marketing in both B2C and B2B markets, specifically focused on issues related to micro-entrepreneurship and non-profit organizations. Derek’s current research is focused on experiential consumption in sport and nonprofit contexts and the study of marketing practices of microentrepreneurs engaged in the direct selling industry. He was a recipient of both the Students' Union Teaching Excellence Honorable Mention Award and the Commerce Undergraduate Society Award for Outstanding Teaching and Learning in 2001-2002.

He has a long association with the Direct Selling industry in Canada and is an active guest speaker and advisor for a number of U.S. and Canadian firms. In 2006, he received the Circle of Distinction award from the Direct Selling Education Foundation (DSEF) in recognition of his years of service to the industry and the DSEF. Derek is currently Chair of the Academic Program Committee and is a board member of the DSEF and is also founder of Selling Smiles 101, an experiential learning project that simultaneously teaches sales and sales management skills while raising money for children’s charities. Students at HSB have raised over $90,000 for the Alberta Chapter of Children’s Wish Foundation through this program.

Peggy Hedges - Senior Instructor, Finance

Dr. Peggy Hedges was a commercial lending manager for a large Canadian financial institution prior to joining the Faculty in 1990. She has a BSc. in Botany, MBA in Finance and a PhD. in Environmental Planning. As well, she is a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers and a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute.

Peggy has developed and taught corporate, personal, investment and public finance courses for the University of Calgary, Athabasca University and Mount Royal College. She is also an officer in a firm which specializes in providing custom financial seminars to corporate clients and development of multi-media finance courses. She has been nominated several times for the University of Calgary Student’s Union Teaching Excellence Award and recently was the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in the Haskayne School of Business.

Her research examines the links between resource allocation decisions, policy and budgeting processes in highly regulated environments. Peggy has published papers in entrepreneurship and has co-authored a textbook on corporate financial management.

Wayne Irvine - Instructor, Accounting

After graduating from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1980, Wayne worked for 12 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers completing his career at the firm as a senior manager in the audit group. In addition to client commitments, he was also responsible for coordinating the firm's in-house training programs. He taught part time at the University of Calgary, for the Society of Management Accountants and for the Institute of Chartered Accountants during his last few years with the firm.

In 1992 he commenced his academic career by taking a full-time teaching position at the University of Calgary, and three years later, accepted a tenure track position at Mount Royal College but continued to teach on a part-time basis at the University of Calgary. He returned to the University on a full time basis in January 1, 2007. Since then, Wayne has received 5 teaching awards from various student associations, the CA profession and the Dean of the Haskayne School of Business.

Since 1988, Wayne has continued his involvement with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta by instructing courses for CA exam candidates. He has also taught exam preparation courses for CFA candidates since 1993 and has been involved with Director Education courses for the past 5 years.

Fred Jacques - Adjunct Professor/Academic Director, Custom Programs, Leadership and Change

Fred Jacques is a leadership educator and consultant with over 30 years of experience in both the public and the private sectors. He has designed and delivered leadership development programs that incorporate best practices in seminar-style instruction, experiential exercises, 360-degree feedback and individualized coaching. Fred is a sought-after facilitator and coach known for his attention to client needs and his sense of humour.

Fred has recently designed and delivered programs on emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, effective inter-personal communication, team building, and all facets of leadership development from the individual to the executive level. He has designed and delivered leadership development programs on behalf of a wide range of clients, including Cenovus, Enbridge, Encana, EnerPlus, Husky, Talisman Energy, and multiple departments within the Government of Alberta.

In addition to teaching in Executive Development Programs at the University of Calgary, Fred has taught at the University of Alberta, the Banff Centre for Management, the Banff School of Advanced Management (BSAM), the University of Lethbridge and Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC where he was an associate faculty member in the M.A. in Leadership program.

Fred has a Ph.D. in Organizational Behaviour from the Haskayne School of Business and an M.A. in Applied Behavioral Sciences from the Leadership Institute of Seattle at City University. He is a Certified Human Resources Professional and is accredited in the use of the Myers‐Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the EQi-2.0 and numerous other assessment tools.

Anne Kleffner - Associate Professor, Finance, Risk Management and Insurance

Dr. Anne Kleffner is an Associate Professor of Risk Management and Insurance at the Haskayne School of Business. She joined the University of Calgary in 1992. Anne received her BSBA from Creighton University, and a PhD in Applied Economics and Managerial Science from The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

Anne teaches primarily in the undergraduate program in the areas of property and liability insurance and risk management. She also teaches in the Directors’ Education Program for the Institute of Corporate Directors and in the Executive MBA program. Anne’s particular areas of research interest include enterprise risk management, insurance solvency, and automobile liability compensation systems. She has published research in The Journal of Risk and Insurance, Risk Management and Insurance Review, The Journal of Insurance Regulation and The Ivey Business Journal.

Anne is an Associate Editor of The Journal of Insurance Issues and is a member of the Risk Theory Society. She is a Past President of the Board for Calgary Meals on Wheels. In her spare time Anne enjoys hiking, running, and traveling.

Jenny Krahn - Assistant Professor, Business Environment

Jenny Krahn is Director of the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL) at the Haskayne School of Business (HSB). The Centre promotes thought leadership, education, and community collaboration related to advanced leadership concepts, such as those that support both principles and organizational performance.

In 2006 Dr. Krahn began as a faculty member at the HSB; her areas of expertise are project / program management and project leadership. She has presented her work at conferences in Europe, the United States, and Canada to academic and practitioner audiences. She has presented keynote, invited, and paper presentations and was an invited visiting lecturer at the Vienna School of Economics and Business Administration.

Jenny teaches courses in undergraduate and graduate programs to students in HSB as well as other programs such as engineering and biomedical technology. She has participated as a member of Advisory Councils in the Faculty of Science and Schulich School of Engineering. Her research and writing has focused on project managers’ leadership skills, multi-contract team alignment, the future of project management, and ethics in project management.

Dr. Krahn also has extensive experience working with industry on delivering business results through projects, team alignment, partnering, and conflict resolution, and planning programs/projects. She has worked in industries such as construction, publishing, municipal government, shopping centre management, energy services, engineering, transportation, education, and others.

Jenny volunteers with a variety of not for profit organizations; she is an alumnus of Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40 and has been recognized by awards from The University of Calgary and The Haskayne School of Business.

Alfred Lehar - Assistant Professor

Alfred is assistant professor in the finance area. He has been teaching at the Haskayne School of Business since 2005. He received an undergraduate degree and a PhD from the University of Vienna. Prior to Joining Haskayne, Alfred held positions at the University of Vienna and the University of British Columbia.

Alfred teaches an introductory finance for the MBAs and a class on Corporate Finance for PhD students. Alfred's areas of research interest include bank regulation, financial stability, and corporate finance.

Alfred is currently researching under what conditions renegotiations can facilitate a private sector workout of a financial crisis. He also works on how information produced by financial markets can be optimally used in bank regulation. In his previous research Alfred developed several methods on how to measure the probability of a financial crisis, analyzed conflicts of interest for financial Analysts, and looked at the empirical fit of alternative option pricing models. Alfred’s work has been published in Management Science, the Journal of Financial Intermediation, the Journal of Banking and Finance, and the Review of Finance.

In his spare time he enjoys skiing and hiking.

Tim Marchant - Adjunct Professor

Dr. Tim Marchant is a global executive, professional geologist and adjunct professor with over 29 years of experience working in various energy markets around the world. After completing his Ph.D. in Geology at Trinity College (Dublin), Tim joined the oil industry in 1980 in Calgary and learned the business while working in Western Canada, the Northwest Territories, the Beaufort Sea and Canada’s offshore East Coast. He then ventured further abroad with postings in Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi UAE and Kuwait, where he served as President, BP Kuwait until 2007, after which he was promoted to Vice President, Middle East E&P. From these various bases, Tim has worked in the major oil producing regions in the world.

Tim retired from BP in 2009 and returned to Calgary, where he is an Adjunct Professor with the International Institute for Resource Industries and Sustainability Studies (IRIS) at the Haskayne School of Business. He also serves as an non-executive director of Vermilion Energy Trust (TSX: VET-UN)

Mehdi Mourali - Associate Professor, Marketing

Dr. Mehdi Mourali is an associate professor of marketing, and the Haskayne Research Professor in Marketing at the Haskayne School of Business. His research focuses on understanding how people make judgments and decisions in the marketplace. In particular, his work investigates how psychological factors, such as motivation and affect, interact with environmental factors, such as the social and physical contexts, to influence consumer judgment and decision-making.

Mehdi’s research has been published in leading marketing journals, including the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Consumer Research, and the Journal of Consumer Psychology. He has also presented his work at several national and international academic conferences, and serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for a number of high-quality publications, including the Journal of Consumer Research and the Journal of Consumer Psychology.

His teaching interests include undergraduate and graduate courses in consumer behaviour, strategic marketing and research methods.

Prior to joining the Haskayne School of Business in 2007, Mehdi taught at the Whittemore School of Business and Economics, University of New Hampshire and lectured at the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University. He holds a PhD in administration, an MSc, and a Bachelor of Administration all from Concordia University.

Jullian Norris - Instructor, Leadership

Julian Norris teaches topics in leadership and directed study in management studies (Indigenous Peoples and Sustainable Development) at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. Originally hailing from the British Isles, Julian is based in the Canadian Rockies. A well-regarded facilitator and mentor, his work with has explored depth-based leadership, the application of living systems theory, working across cultures, strategic planning, nature and place-based learning, and mindfulness practices. A seasoned guide of adventurous journeys through the mysteries of nature and psyche, Julian has worked with at-risk youth and existentially-challenged adults, with senior leaders from the government, corporate and non-profit sectors, with numerous Aboriginal communities and in various international development contexts. Building on his PhD research around personal transformation and systems change, much of his work centers on supporting leaders to discover and develop their own deeper capacities and working with complex systems to address thorny challenges. He has a particular solidarity with those who find themselves living, working and asking themselves profound questions in the space where these two domains overlap.

Olga Petricevic - Assistant Professor, Strategic Management

Olga Petričević received her PhD degree in Strategic Management from the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. Her research interests are at the intersection of strategic management, technology and innovation, and international strategy. In her research she addresses questions related to the nature and the role of dynamic capabilities in a firm’s quest to successfully and frequently engage in a variety of inter-firm collaborations with the potential to generate breakthrough innovations in nascent technological fields. She has received the American Association of University Women fellowship for her dissertation work.

Her early work has been published in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets such as the International Business Review, the International Journal of Strategic Change Management, and the Thunderbird International Business Review. She actively presents her research at international and national conferences including the Annual Meetings of the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, Annual Meetings of the Academy of International Business, and Atlanta Competitive Advantage Conference. She served as the Program Coordinator and the Organizing Committee Member for the Atlanta Competitive Advantage Conference for two years. She is the recipient of the Best Reviewer Award from the Business Policy and Strategy division of the Academy of Management Annual Meetings in 2010 and 2013.

Her early work has been published in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets such as the International Business Review, the International Journal of Strategic Change Management, and the Thunderbird International Business Review. She actively presents her research at international and national conferences including the Annual Meetings of the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, Annual Meetings of the Academy of International Business, and Atlanta Competitive Advantage Conference. Rick Powers - National Academic Director, The Directors Education Program

After receiving his MBA and LLB from Queen’s University, Rick worked as a corporate lawyer for a national Canadian law firm. He later served as Corporate Counsel for Honda Canada Inc., before joining the University of Toronto. After teaching and serving in several administrative roles at the University of Toronto at Scarborough, Rick joined the Rotman School of Management in 2005. He has recently completed a 5-Year term as the Associate Dean and Executive Director of the Rotman MBA and Master of Finance Programs. Rick’s areas of expertise include corporate governance, ethics, business and corporate law and sports marketing. A recipient of numerous teaching and student awards, Rick received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Rotman School of Management in January, 2013. An internationally recognized expert in both corporate and not-for-profit governance, Rick is the National Academic Director of The Directors Education Program and the Not-For-Profit Governance Essentials Program (in partnership with the Institute of Corporate Directors – ICD). He also teaches in Rotman’s Executive MBA, OMNIUM, MBA and Executive Education Programs. He is a director of several not-for-profit organizations and frequently comments on legal and governance issues in various media across Canada.

Simon Raby - Visiting Professor, Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Simon Raby is an academic, entrepreneur, coach and consultant. As a visiting Professor, Simon has joined the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Haskayne School of Business in 2015 to develop a deep understanding of the unique challenges facing Albertan entrepreneurs as they build and grow their businesses.

Simon holds a B.Sc. in Management Science, a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Management from the University of Kent, UK. Simon is a qualified coach and holds accredited to a selection of psychological tools.

Simon worked in construction and manufacturing in the formative part of his career providing a conduit and acting as a catalyst for change and improvement, working to translate and transfer knowledge between academia and business in the areas of business strategy, operations and people (where he completed his M.Sc., part time). His experiences of working with senior leaders and those at the coalface led him to question: how do entrepreneurs achieve success?

Simon’s quest to find an answer initially took him out of organisational practice, into research (where he completed his Ph.D., part time) and then onto designing and delivering personal and organisational development programs and consultancy. Through these career transitions, Simon enjoyed spending many hours debating, learning and challenging the way business is conducted, and how individuals and organisations develop and grow. Simon founded the ten characteristics that define entrepreneurial success.

Simon has co-founded an entrepreneurial venture “Business Improvement and Growth Associates Ltd” focused on supporting ambitious business owners achieve success. This organisation delivers support to entrepreneurs to help them transition from operationally focused roles to strategic leaders, whilst developing and implementing comprehensive and robust strategies for future growth, at personal and organisational levels.

Simon is also the deputy director of an applied research centre (University of Kent), a Visiting Professor in Entrepreneurship (University of Calgary) and serves on the Board of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Simon has published internationally ranked academic articles and also captures learning through a blog for practitioners.

Scott Radford - Associate Dean and Associate Professor, Teaching & Learning

Scott Radford joined the marketing faculty at Haskayne in 2007 after completing his PhD at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He holds a B.E.D.S. in Architecture (Dalhousie, 1995), a B.A. in Philosophy (University of New Brunswick, 1998), and an MBA (University of New Brunswick, 2003). Scott worked in Montreal for several years where he was the Director of Advertising for R. Nicholls Distributors - the largest law enforcement distributor in Canada; and then the Operations and Marketing Manager for Collins Safety - a distributor of safety footwear and equipment.

Scott's research focuses on innovation and new technology, particularly as it relates to consumer preferences. His work appears in the Journal of Product Innovation Management, Marketing Letters, Journal of Macromarketing, Journal of Consumer Behaviour, and Journal of Consumer Culture. Scott is currently teaching Marketing Communication and Arts & Culture Marketing.

Michael Robinson - Associate Professor, Finance

Michael Robinson is an Associate Professor of Finance in the Haskayne School of Business and teaches corporate finance, corporate governance, and investment analysis and portfolio management to undergraduate and MBA students. Michael has published several books and academic research papers that study Canadian capital markets, market efficiency, and methods of raising equity capital for developing firms. His most recent research interests include corporate social responsibility, private equity markets, and the role of a firm’s board of directors in growth oriented firms. He received the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence for the 2005/2006 academic year.

Michael’s private sector experience includes work as a computer programmer and systems analyst, and more recently as a venture capitalist while on a three-year leave from the University of Calgary. In this latter position he was the lead investor for several multi-million dollar investments in high technology firms in Western Canada, and served as a director for a number of private investor firms. Michael is the past Chair of the Investment Operations Committee (IOC) of the Investment Management Division (IMD) of Alberta Revenue. The IMD managed over $50 billion of assets on behalf of the Government of Alberta and selected public sector pension plans and during Michael’s tenure was transformed from a government department to the Crown Corporation Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo).

Michael currently sits on the board of the Glenbow Museum (where he chairs the Audit/Investment Committee) and the board of CGA Alberta.

Bob Schulz - Professor, Petroleum Land Management

Dr. Bob Schulz is a Professor in the Strategy and Global Management (SGMA) and the Entrepreneurship and Innovation (ENTI) areas. He has been teaching at the Haskayne School of Business since 1973. He received his BA (Mathematics) from St. Vincent College (Latrobe, Pa.), BS in Mechanical-Industrial from University of Notre Dame, MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, and PhD in Business Administration from The Ohio State University. Prior to joining Haskayne, Bob was Education Director for Management Horizons Data Systems in Columbus, Ohio. He has taught Strategic Decision-Making for MBAs as an Adjunct Professor for Mendoza College of Business at University of Notre Dame.

Bob teaches the capstone senior Business Strategy course for undergraduate students, Management Education for doctoral students, first-week intensive Strategy course for EMBAs and Global Energy Executive MBAs (GEEMBA), major project management course for EMBAs and GEEMBAs, and more than 450 executive education programs. Bob’s particular areas of research interest include innovation, time management, telework, manager as coach, and the future environment of business. He is frequently in the local, national, and international media regarding all aspects of the energy sector.

He has received 23 outstanding teaching and student service awards, including “top-10” in Canada among more than 39,000 professors from all disciplines and was the first recipient of the Order of the University of Calgary.

Bob has coached student intercollegiate competition teams to 84 national undergraduate titles and ranked #1 or #2 overall in Canada for 36 of 37 years, two world-level undergraduate titles, four world-level MBA championships, and 24 international competition awards (including Hult Prize regionals ). He has been an angel investor, director, and/or advisor to more than 25 public, private, and non-profit organizations and is well-known as a “super-connector” of interesting people. In his spare time, Bob enjoys semi-competitive golf.

Peter Sherer - Associate Professor, Human Resources and Organizational Dynamics

Peter Sherer is an associate professor at the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to joining the Haskayne School, he was a faculty member at the University of Illinois, the University of Oregon, and the Wharton School.

He teaches MBA, Ph.D., and executive MBA courses. His teaching interests include strategic human resource management, organizational theory, business strategy, and research methods. He has been the recipient of six teaching awards during his years at the Haskayne School of Business, the University of Oregon, and the Wharton School. He was recognized in 2005 as one of the top MBA professors in Canada by Canadian Business.

He has published a number of articles in leading journals and his work has appeared in major research volumes. Professor Sherer (along with K. Lee) was awarded the Best Paper of 2002 in the Academy of Management Journal by the Academy of Management for his paper on institutional change in law firms. The paper was also recognized by the editorial board of the Academy of Management Journal (February, 2006) as one of the most interesting academic journal articles in management over the last 100 years.

Professor Sherer is on the editorial board of the Academy of Management Journal.

Brent Snider - Instructor, Operations Management

Brent is an instructor in the Operations Management area. He has been teaching at the Haskayne School of Business since 2003. Brent graduated with distinction from Wilfrid Laurier University's Honours Bachelor of Business Administration program in 1997, majoring in Management Accounting, with a minor in Economics. He obtained the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation from The Society of Management Accountants of Ontario in 2000. In 2004 Brent completed the MBA Thesis program at University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business, majoring in Operations Management. Prior to joining Haskayne, Brent worked in the automotive industry with Linamar, the injection molding industry with Husky Injection Molding Systems, and the ERP software industry as a product specialist with Navision Software (now Microsoft Dynamics) and as an implementation project leader with CSB Systems. He has also instructed courses at Mount Royal University and for the Society of Management Accountants of Alberta's Strategic Leadership Program.

Brent teaches in the areas of Operations Management and Management Studies, primarily for the undergraduate program. He has successfully implemented internet based computer simulations into all of his courses and continues to incorporate various experiential learning exercises into the core and elective classes that he teaches.

Brent's research interests focus on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and innovative experiential classroom exercises. His work has been published in the International Journal of Operations and Production Management (IJOPM), Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education (DSJIE), and the International Journal of Information and Operations Management Education (IJIOME).

Brent has won numerous awards for his teaching, research, and service to date. His four teaching awards include receiving both the MBA Society and Commerce Undergraduate Society Outstanding Teaching & Learning awards in the same academic year (2008-2009). On the research side, Brent’s paper “ERP implementation at SMEs: analysis of five Canadian cases”, won the prestigious Outstanding Paper Award from the International Journal of Operations & Production Management (IJOPM) for 2010. Finally, in recognition of his years of dedicated service as the faculty advisor for the business school’s largest student club, Brent received the Faculty Superior Service Award in 2010.

Ivan Zendel - Academic Director, Custom Programs

Ivan Zendel is a clinical psychologist with over 20 years’ experience working with organizations, families and individuals. He is a founding partner in Paradigm Solutions. Ivan received a Ph.D. from the Department of Psychology at McGill University. Following his arrival in Calgary, he was appointed Director of Clinical Training in Psychology at Foothills Hospital and has held appointments in the Faculties of Medicine and Education

Since co-founding Paradigm Solutions, Ivan has worked with large and medium sized organizations in providing individual and team counseling and facilitation focused on improving organizational performance. He is a recognized expert in conflict resolution, stress management, interpersonal relationships, and psychological and organizational assessment.

Ivan combines his skill as a people specialist with a broad knowledge and curiosity in other areas. He has published extensively in scientific journals and the popular press.

Rick Timlick - Associate Faculty

Rick Timlick is an Associate faculty member of Haskayne Executive Education. He specializes in effective methodologies and tools that help clients quickly come to grips with the challenging issues they face around cost management and operational effectiveness.

Rick has developed practical ways to enable the greatness in individuals and teams in areas of cost management, operational excellence (including supply chain and project management), leadership (coaching and developing individuals and teams); performance consulting (strategy, mission/vision, and organizational effectiveness/efficiency processes); and human development, (culture shifts, change management, motivation, and conflict resolution).

Rick has more than 18 years of experience in the private industry as well as non-profit organizations. He has a black-belt in Six Sigma, a master black-belt in Lean.

He has consulted with organizations dealing with complex operational issues, improving their supply chain and project management practices that have saved significant OPEX dollars, initial chartering of new executive teams, as well as senior management strategy and planning retreats. He has also been called in to assist organizations in dealing with conflict, team-related problems at critical times, or process improvements needed to rapidly improve the organizational condition.

Rick has assisted in the transformation of many organizations - ranging from $3B large organizations to $5M small businesses - all across the globe, which have included at times very remote client locations.
