BComm Year 1 Courses
Leadership is a key component in any organization, role and industry. Available to all University of Calgary undergraduate students, the Embedded Certificate in Leadership Studies gives undergraduate students the opportunity to explore the foundations of leadership and build the necessary skills to succeed as a leader. By adding this six-course embedded certificate, students will supplement the technical knowledge gained through their current program with tangible leadership skills.
To add the embedded certificate to a current degree program, students must apply for a program revision from October 1, 2021 - February 1, 2022. Students may apply for a program revision through their student centre by selecting the embedded certificate in Leadership Studies (LDST-EMC) under the embedded certificates section. Students are encouraged to start working towards the embedded certificate requirements by enrolling in their electives this academic year.
BComm Year 1 Programs
The CCAL Peer Network is for first year students interested in both developing their leadership skills and meeting their fellow students. It is a series of voluntary online sessions embedded in the SGMA 217 course. First-year BComm students enrolled in SGMA 217 can engage with the CCAL Peer Network as a way to develop a strong foundation in leadership behaviours. Using their own current experiences, students are encouraged to notice and practice leadership through their group work, on the job, or through volunteer roles.
All students enrolled in SGMA 217 will have access to the CCAL Peer Network program. Stay tuned to the SGMA 217 D2L page for session specific information. Questions?
Learning with Leaders focuses on leadership development through a one-hour Q&A, students gain insight into both the challenges and opportunities of leadership. This program connects small groups of Haskayne students (6-8 students per event) to experienced senior leaders from a variety of disciplines, industries and backgrounds.
Held in an informal small group format, the conversations are intended to be open, unscripted, and dynamic, where students directly interface with industry leaders and actively engage in dialogue with their peers and the leader. Participants learn about leadership, not only from the leader but with each other.
Haskayne Adventure Leadership offers unique transformational learning experiences through a range of specialized programs that take students beyond the classroom and into the outdoors. These experiences include nature-based and experiential learning, wilderness solos and expeditions, leadership retreats, martial arts training, arts-based learning, meditation, Qigong and mindfulness practice.

The CCAL Annual Celebration Summit is the culmination of the previous academic year’s research, classes, programs and events. It brings together leaders in industry, public sector, academia, and students for a series of live sessions, thought-provoking discussions, and online resources to give participants a flexible digital learning experience. Held in the spring, the Summit highlights ethics, leadership learning and research in multiple sessions, featuring influential industry leaders, top academics and emerging student leaders.

The BMO Mentorship Program at the Haskayne School of Business gives students the opportunity to connect and learn from individuals in the business community through six one-on-one mentoring sessions over the course of 8 months. These connections help bridge the gap between what students learn in the classroom and what is happening in the real world. Through the program, you will have access to great evidence-based leadership development content to discuss with your mentor. It is an excellent chance for students to practice and build their leadership capabilities by connecting with the business community to gain applicable insight and knowledge relating to their future endeavours.
The program’s focus is leadership development and offers meaningful learning experiences to BComm (2nd year and up), MBA and Master of Management students.
Students are required to attend an orientation session in advance of program launch so that they are equipped to think about their goals and come to meetings with their mentor well prepared. Students and their mentors connect in-person, over the phone, or virtually to discuss their personal, professional and leadership goals and skills development.

This program connects small groups of Haskayne students (6-8 students per event) to experienced senior leaders from a variety of disciplines, industries and backgrounds.

Participants learn about leadership, not only from the leader but with each other.

BComm Year 3 Courses
Develop an increased awareness of the importance of corporate governance systems and strong financial decision making systems in developing effective business enterprises. Specific emphasis on the resolution of agency problems, the role of the board of directors, compensation systems and financial modelling.
Students will develop skills in applying a variety of different ethics frameworks to problems and an understanding of when various frameworks are most applicable. Critical thinking skills will be honed using cases, readings, class discussions and written opinion. Leadership theories, including gender and cultural influences, will be covered. Students will be able to identify components of their leadership styles in self and others. Tools to operationalize ethical choices will be provided. Students will witness and experience leadership as it progresses from individual to team to organizational to community levels.
OBHR 447 (formerly BSEN 449) is known as the Wilderness Retreat and is open to BComm undergraduates.
Delivered at the Barrier Lake field station of the University of Calgary’s Biogeoscience Institute, the Wilderness Retreat is one of Haskayne’s most unique and exciting elective courses. The one-week course is offered each July at both the undergraduate and MBA level.
The retreat is an unconventional learning experience for business students that combines outdoor activities, personal growth challenges, team building, self-reflection, and cross-cultural learning.
The purpose of the course is to cultivate core leadership skills in the context of sustainable development. “Great leaders are people of exceptional integrity, vision, and creativity who inspire others to achieve their best for the greater good.”
Haskayne Wilderness Retreat –ii’taa’poh’to’p in Real Time
Application Process
OBHR 559 is known as the Haskayne Leadership Expedition and is open to BComm undergraduates. This course takes place during the fall block week (late August/ early September).
The Haskayne Leadership Expedition is a five-day backpacking expedition that will take participants into spectacular high mountain terrain in the Rockies. Recalling the old adage that “there are no passengers, only crew” on a true expedition, students will quickly find themselves engaged in learning to lead every aspect of the journey. Alongside the fun, camaraderie and adventure, course elements will include training in a range of technical skills for traveling safely and efficiently in the mountains (e.g. trip planning, navigation & route-finding, risk assessment, campcraft, wilderness skills, ecological awareness), problem-solving challenges, leadership assignments, structured personal reflection, small group work and both the structured discipline and adaptive creativity required to achieve expedition goals while traveling in challenging wilderness terrain under unpredictable conditions.
Application Process
Students fill out an application for the course. All applications are reviewed and the top 24 applications will be offered a place in the course. Those not selected will be offered a place on the waitlist. Applications for Fall 2021 are now closed.

The Ethical Leadership in Business Speaker Series provides students with the opportunity to engage with leading ethics scholars and to dive deeper into core ethical concepts on a more critical level. Every year CCAL brings in a cohort of prominent ethicists from across North America. These speakers focus on the multiple perspectives of business ethics, with each speaker bringing their own unique approach.

OBHR 668.3, known as Leading in Complexity, is open to MBA Students and runs over the course of a week in November.
Leading in Complexity is an intensive course intended for highly motivated and curious learners. It is designed to give students theoretical maps and practical tools with which to lead and make effective decisions in complex, high stakes contexts. Drawing from both systems theory and developmental psychology it blends a traditional classroom format with outdoor and experiential education, reflexive practice, and martial arts-based somatic coaching to create a unique learning environment.

The Jarislowsky Fellowship in Business Management started at the Haskayne School of Business in 2006 and has been connecting senior-level professionals with students ever since. The aim? To expose MBA and EMBA students to a holistic perspective to business through community involvement and an appreciation of the arts, international culture, religion, politics and diversity. The fellowship endeavors to enhance exposure of Haskayne MBA and EMBA students to the “real world” of business.

MMgmt Courses
As part of the Haskayne Master of Management program, students participate in a weeklong intensive ethics capstone project. The project involves lectures and case studies involving a specific industry, working alongside current industry professionals. Previous case studies include Westjet and ATB Financial as representatives of the tourism and finance sectors.
CCAL has partnered with the MMgmt program in providing lecturers and programming with a focus on business ethics. CCAL Fellows Dr. David Dick, Dr. Cari Din and Jamie Clarke are past contributors to this capstone course.
