Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL)

Courses

Advanced leadership is a part of life in many ways, and leadership education at the Haskayne School of Business is part of many courses, whether they are located in the classroom setting or in the beautiful and challenging natural environment of Alberta.

OBHR 519 is known as the Haskayne Leadership Expedition and is open to BComm undergraduates. This course takes place during the fall block week (late August/ early September).

The Haskayne Leadership Expedition is a five-day backpacking expedition that will take participants into spectacular high mountain terrain in the Rockies. Recalling the old adage that “there are no passengers, only crew” on a true expedition, students will quickly find themselves engaged in learning to lead every aspect of the journey. Alongside the fun, camaraderie and adventure, course elements will include training in a range of technical skills for travelling safely and efficiently in the mountains (e.g. trip planning, navigation & route-finding, risk assessment, campcraft, wilderness skills, ecological awareness), problem-solving challenges, leadership assignments, structured personal reflection, small group work and both the structured discipline and adaptive creativity required to achieve expedition goals while travelling in challenging wilderness terrain under unpredictable conditions.

Application Process
Students fill out an application for the course. All applications are reviewed and the top 24 applications will be offered a place in the course. Those not selected will be offered a place on the waitlist. Applications for Fall 2024 are ongoing.

Leadership Experience Opportunities

The Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business supports leadership development through experiential leadership experiences that take students out of the classroom and immerse them in safe yet challenging spaces where they can test new leadership skills.

The BMO Mentorship Program at the Haskayne School of Business gives students the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals through six one-on-one meetings between September and April. Students participate in a required orientation in advance of program launch so that they are prepared to think about their goals and come to meetings with their mentor well prepared. The program hosts events through the year offered jointly to mentors and mentees as well as events for only mentors or only mentees. A research project runs alongside the program and focuses on leadership development through mentoring.

The Jarislowsky Fellowship in Business Management started at the Haskayne School of Business in 2006 and has been connecting senior-level professionals with students ever since. The aim? To expose MBA and EMBA students to a holistic perspective to business through community involvement and an appreciation of the arts, international culture, religion, politics and diversity. The fellowship endeavors to enhance exposure of Haskayne MBA and EMBA students to the “real world” of business.

Leadership is a key component in any organization, role and industry. Available to all University of Calgary undergraduate students, the embedded certificate in Leadership Studies gives undergraduate students the opportunity to explore the foundations of leadership and build the necessary skills to succeed as a leader. By adding this six-course embedded certificate, students will supplement the technical knowledge gained through their current program with tangible leadership skills.

The embedded certificate was thoughtfully developed with experiential learning and evidence-based research in mind. Students enrolled in the embedded certificate will apply their newly acquired knowledge to real-world projects in their area of study and have access to the mentorship program.

To add the embedded certificate to a current degree program, students can apply for a program revision starting October 1, 2020. Core courses will launch in Fall 2021, students are encouraged to start working towards the embedded certificate requirements by enrolling in their electives this academic year (2020).
