The CCAL Leadership Challenge Weekend

Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL)

Advanced leadership and effective teamwork. At every level of your academic, personal and career journey these two elements are critical to success. The CCAL Leadership Challenge Weekend is a unique weekend field course designed to help students practice the real world competencies, attitudes and self-awareness skills required by advanced leaders and effective teams in the modern business world. Based at a lodge in the Rockies, students will participate in a range of engaging experiential activities and challenges designed to build their leadership skills and reflect on the implications for their academic, community and professional roles.

The CCAL Leadership Challenge Weekend is intended to be an exciting, fun and meaningful learning experience that challenges participants to discover and develop their leadership potential. It is based on the belief that compelling leadership experiences can help to round out and anchor the other kinds of learning available to undergraduate students at Haskayne. Well-rounded leaders are able to develop leadership skills from lectures, reading, mentoring, participation in student clubs, extra-curricular activities, sports and volunteer work, etc. The CCAL Leadership Challenge creates learning scenarios that cannot easily be replicated in a classroom. Participants may find themselves exploring leadership and teamwork while perched on a high ropes course or rock-climbing tower, guiding a team through a series of navigation challenges, using their ingenuity to solve a novel engineering problem or communication challenge. At the same time, they will engage in structured personal and group reflection intended to draw out transferable lessons and applicable skills.

Course elements are intended to be a foundation to help students develop and practice the fundamentals of advanced leadership including:

  • group leadership and facilitation skills
  • problem-solving and creative thinking
  • inter-personal and communication skills
  • self-awareness and reflective skills
  • planning, execution and adaptive skills
  • judgment and decision-making skills
  • building and maintaining an effective team culture

All Haskayne BComm students are eligible to participate. Participation costs only $35, which covers transportation, food and lodging for two nights.

This program is typically held in November. The Leadership Challenge Weekend will not be running in Fall 2020, check back for updates in Fall 2021.
