Program

The Haskayne Master of Finance (MFin) is a 16-month, course-based, technical finance degree aimed at quantitatively strong candidates seeking roles that require advanced analytics, modeling, and empirical methods. An MBA (Finance) is broader, management-oriented, and less technical.

The Haskayne Master of Finance (MFin) is Western Canada’s only dedicated MFin program. It is delivered in 16 continuous months with intensive, applied coursework, with access to Mathison Hall facilities, industry-expert instructors for applied topics and a built-in work-integrated learning choice.

Recent grads or early-career professionals from math, statistics, computer science, economics or business. Candidates pursuing the CFA will find it a great fit.

16 months, full-time, with no scheduled break.

This program is very technically focused. You’ll cover asset pricing, investments, derivatives, econometrics and corporate finance on top of a quantitative foundations block week. Admission requires three prior university-level quantitative courses (nine credits total).

You will apply programming skills for econometrics, time-series modeling, and back-testing strategies (e.g., in Financial Econometrics and Quantitative Investing). You will  also work with professional market data platforms available through Haskayne’s lab resources.

Choose one:

  • INTE616 — Professional Internship in Finance (paid) — culminates in a professional report.
  • INTE617 — Research Consulting Project in Finance — applied research on a real finance problem.

Yes. Students are thoroughly prepared to tackle all three CFA exam levels.

Yes. Graduates gain the theory, econometrics, and research exposure that provide a solid base for a PhD (with appropriate research interests and preparation).

Student experience

Half-day classes, team projects, and hands-on applications. Spring/Summer courses run in two-week immersive blocks (with one-week gaps), enabling deep dives and access to industry sessionals.

Typically you can expect between 30-50 students per cohort.

The Haskayne Master of Finance (MFin) is a cohort program, which means that you will remain with the same group of individuals throughout the 16-month program.

Expect a full-time graduate workload: half-day classes plus substantial hours for assignments, projects and networking activities.

The program is full-time and intensive. Limited part-time work may be possible, but international students must follow study/work-permit rules.

Professional Development I & II include networking and interview practice; industry experts teach applied courses; and work-integrated learning (internships or research projects) that connects you directly with employers or faculty members.

No. A four-year bachelor’s degree is required to apply to the Haskayne Master of Finance (MFin). Quantitative fields are ideal.

Yes. Students may apply for the Haskayne Master of Finance (MFin) program straight from their undergrad.

Applicants for the Haskayne Master of Finance (MFin) need at least three semester-long courses (nine credits in total) across calculus, statistics, econometrics, quantitative economics, linear algebra, probability or similar.

No. Typical entrants into the Haskayne Master of Finance (MFin) have less than two years of experience; early-career professionals are welcome.

Yes. GMAT (recommended >600) or GRE equivalent.

Tuition and funding

Approx. $43,196 (Domestic); $75,162 (International) for the full program (subject to change).

In addition to tuition and university fees, you should budget for living expenses, a laptop or other required technology and transportation. Please note that tuition does not cover course materials such as textbooks and software. 

More than $300,000 in Haskayne Master of Finance (MFin) scholarships are available annually, with up to $20,000 available per student. You are automatically considered for entrance awards when you submit your application to the program. Awards are offered on a rolling basis as applications are received. International applicants

Yes. It is recommended you apply for a study permit and work permit together. The work-integrated learning component of the Haskayne Master of Finance (MFin) program requires a Co-op work permit.

TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, CAEL or Academic Communication Certificate (A-).

For applicants required to present proficiency in English, a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 92 (4.5 for tests taken after January 21, 2026) with no section less than 20 (4.0 in reading, writing and speaking; and 4.5 in listening for tests taken after January 21, 2026), an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 with no section less than 6.0 or a Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) overall score of 70. 

This requirement can also be met by completing the Academic Communication Certificate with a minimum overall grade of A-.
