The Haskayne School of Business seeks highly motivated applicants with strong academic preparation and a clear interest in pursuing rigorous scholarly research. Successful applicants demonstrate intellectual curiosity, research potential, and alignment with faculty expertise.

The PhD program admits one cohort per year, with entry in the Fall semester. Only complete applications received by the deadline will be reviewed by the PhD Office and faculty across academic areas.

Step 1: Check your eligibility

Degree and GPA requirements

  • A master’s degree from an accredited institution
  • A minimum 3.5 GPA on a four-point scale in the last two years of study

In exceptional circumstances, applicants may be considered for admission without a master’s degree. Contact the PhD Office for more information.

GMAT or GRE

GMAT recommended score of 650 (10th edition) or 595 (Focus edition), or GRE at or above the 70th percentile.

English proficiency

Required for non-native speakers.

  • TOEFL: 97 (iBT) or 580 (paper-based)
  • IELTS: 7.0
  • Duolingo: 125 (with no sub-score below 105)

This requirement may be waived where prior degrees were completed in English as the language of instruction.

Research fit and supervision

You do not need to have a supervisor in place before applying.

However, you are encouraged to review faculty research areas and publications and identify potential supervisors whose work closely aligns with your proposed area of study.

  • Supervisor interest does not guarantee admission.
  • Admission decisions are made through the formal application process, not by individual faculty members.

*Late applications are not guaranteed review and may be considered only if space, funding and supervisory capacity remain after the priority round.

Step 3: Prepare your application

Documents you'll need

  • A current CV

  • A clear and concise Statement of Purpose

  • Copies of degree certificates

  • Two references, preferably academic

    At least one from an individual(s) who is familiar with your past academic performance.

  • Reference letter request form(s)

  • Official transcripts 

  • Unofficial transcripts

  • GMAT/GRE official score report

  • TOEFL / IELTS official score report (if required)

Step 4: Submit your application

Applications are submitted through the University of Calgary's online application system.

  • Forgot your UCID? Retrieve it through the application system.

Upload the following documents to your online application:

  1. A current CV

Pay the application fee

Pay the non-refundable application fee to complete your application:

  • Canadian citizens and permanent residents: $123
  • International applicants: $145

Official transcripts
Official transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution to the Haskayne School of Business. If they are not in English, official translated copies are also required.

Why is my student centre showing that I have outstanding documents when I don’t?

The application deadline time is an extremely busy time of year for our one Program Specialist. Our volume of work is at the highest level. We do our best to respond to your inquiries as quickly as possible; however, we request patience from all applicants. We update checklists as soon as possible. Please allow time for a response to your email, and make sure you carefully read any email you receive.

I submitted an application, but my referees weren’t notified. What can I do?

Please send a brief email to the Program Specialist and request the email to be sent again. Make sure you mention your student ID and which referee did not receive the information.
