The Value of Case Competitions at Haskayne
At the Haskayne School of Business, case competitions are more than contests—they are transformative learning experiences. They challenge students to analyze complex business problems, develop innovative solutions, and present their strategies to industry experts. Through these experiences, students strengthen their analytical, communication, teamwork and presentation skills while applying classroom learning to real-world business challenges. Case competitions also provide opportunities to build confidence, connect with industry professionals, meet students from other schools and represent Haskayne on local, national and international stages.
How to get involved
Haskayne case competitions fall into three categories:
Signature Competitions
Signature competitions are a select group of priority case competitions supported through dedicated funding from Haskayne's overall case competition resources. These competitions are strategically identified as key opportunities for Haskayne students to compete at a high level and represent the school.
How to participate:

Haskayne-hosted & Donor-supported Competitions
This category includes competitions hosted by Haskayne as well as competitions supported through specific donor funding. These opportunities may have dedicated funding associated with the individual competition or donor.
How to participate:
Opportunities are shared through Haskayne Centres, D2L program sites, social media and TV monitors.
Open Call Competitions (by Application)
Students interested in participating in a case competition that is not identified as a Signature Competition or Haskayne-hosted & Donor supported Competition, may apply for funding through the Haskayne Case Competition Committee. If approved, a set amount of funding will be provided. Funding is not guaranteed and is subject to available resources and meeting the application criteria. Since his early days at UCalgary entering a team in the inaugural Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC) in 1978, Dr. Bob Schulz, PhD has coached Haskayne students to 108 national championships and more than 200 podium finishes. Each ICBC is made up of smaller competitions in two different streams that cover different disciplines like accounting, business policy, ethics, finance, human resources and marketing.
With the partnership of Dr. Bob and Phil Davidson, DBA, Haskayne is also the only school to win all 10 historical ICBC Finals events at least once over the years. In fact, they have actually won each of those 10 events at least twice and continued its legacy of achieving a top-three finish at every ICBC competition since the competition began almost 50 years ago.
