Ethics Review Steps

Haskayne Faculty and Research

What are the ethics review steps for data collection projects to develop research or professional skills?

Professional Skill Development:

All undergraduate and graduate data collection projects that are designed to develop professional skills are reviewed by the Chair of the Haskayne School of Business Research Ethics Committee (HSBREC).

Your application will be reviewed to assess whether the data collection poses more than minimal risk and ensure that the recruitment process and consent forms comply with the appropriate professional codes of ethics. You should identify the steps that you will take to inform students of the relevant professional codes of conduct.

The application for ethics approval are stored centrally so that any enquiry about the project or the students can be directed to the right individuals. Course applications will be stored for five years, after which a new application will be required.

Research Skill Development:

Any research at the University of Calgary, by faculty and students, involving human subjects is covered by the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans. The Tri-Council Policy Statement requires all research involving human subjects to be reviewed by the appropriate research ethics board within the institution.

All faculty and graduate student research projects at the University of Calgary must be reviewed by the Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board (CFREB).

Undergraduate and graduate data collection projects are reviewed by the Chair of the HSBREC following the Tri-Council Policy Statement. Course-based ethics approvals are valid for five (5) years.
