Join us for a two-day workshop that will bring together leading minds and emerging scholars in management and related fields seeking to advance research on cultivating respect and fostering an environment of belonging, presented by the Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources area at the Haskayne School of Business.
Working Together: Respect and Recognition in Organizations
This workshop is an opportunity for scholars working on research in organizational behaviour and human resources (OBHR), I-O psychology, and management, including Ph.D. students, to gain feedback from top-tier journal editors and prominent scholars, including Drs. Lilia Cortina, Sonia Kang, Eden King, Tammy Allen, Patrick McKay, Alicia Grandey, Erin Reid and Brianna Barker Caza.

Research Mentors

Dr. Tammy Allen, Distinguished University Professor at the University of South Florida; Associate Editor at the Journal of Applied Psychology. For over two decades her research has helped advance and shape scholarship on the connections between work and family, on organizational practices such as flexible work arrangements, and the science and practice of mentoring relationships.

Dr. Brianna Barker Caza, Professor of Management at the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina Greensboro; Associate Editor at the Academy of Management Discoveries. Her research program seeks to understand the resources and processes that produce resilience in turbulent work contexts.

Dr. Lilia Cortina, University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor of Psychology and Women’s & Gender Studies and Professor (by courtesy) of Management & Organizations at the University of Michigan; Associate Editor at Journal of Business & Psychology. She investigates the many ways in which people are subordinated, violated, and relegated to the margins of organizational life.

Dr. Alicia Grandey, Liberal Arts Professor of Psychology at Penn State University; Associate Editor at the Journal of Applied Psychology. She has published 65+ articles on emotional labor (e.g., “service with a smile”), workplace mistreatment, and work diversity (age/gender/racial/political), and their implications for both performance and health of service workers.

Dr. Sonia K. Kang, Professor of Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management at the Rotman School of Managment, University of Toronto where she is also a Faculty Research Fellow at the Rotman School of Management’s Institute for Gender and the Economy (GATE) and Chief Scientist, Organizations in the Behavioural Economics in Action Research Centre at Rotman (BEAR).

Dr. Eden King, Co-Editor-in-Chief at the Journal of Business and Psychology, Lynette S. Autrey Professor of Psychology at Rice University where she is pursuing a program of research that seeks to guide the equitable and effective management of diverse organizations.

Dr. Patrick McKay, Professor of Management in the College of Business at East Carolina University; Associate Editor at the Journal of Management. His research interests include demographic disparities in worker outcomes, diversity, diversity climate, organizational demography, worker attitudes and retention, and job- and organizational-level performance.

Dr. Erin Marie Reid, is the Canada Research Chair in Work, Careers and Organizations and a Professor of Human Resources and Management. She studies the connections between inequality, the careers people build, and the evolving design of work and organizations.
Submission
This workshop is intended to provide a highly individualized and intimate developmental experience. There are 32 spaces available for the workshop. The program committee will evaluate applications on a first-come, first-serve basis until spots fill up. Interested scholars should submit an in-progress paper. Accepted submissions will receive individualized and specific feedback from an expert mentor and peers studying similar topics in a small group setting. The more developed the submission, the better your feedback will be.
Submissions should focus on research related to the topic of respect & belonging in the workplace. If you are unsure whether your paper fits the topic and are interested in submitting, please email hsbresearch@ucalgary.ca with questions.
Paper submissions must follow APA guidelines, and your submission package (word or pdf) must include:
- A paper (max 30 double-spaced pages excluding tables, figures, title page, references, and abstract)
- An abstract of max 200 words and up to 5 keywords
- A title page that identifies co-authors with affiliations
Submission deadline: Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. Mountain Time. Successful applicants will be notified by email at the beginning of August.
