Community for Advanced Leadership Strengthens Mentors’ Connections

CCAL hosts a holiday mingle event to celebrate mentors in the Haskayne Mentorship Program

On December 16, the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL) hosted a 'holiday mingle' to celebrate the time and effort contributed by mentors in the Haskayne Mentorship Program. This was an opportunity for mentors to meet and network with the other mentors in the program to share their observations and learn from the experiences of others.

The Haskayne Mentorship Program, run by CCAL pairs BComm and MBA students with established business professionals in the Calgary community. Students receive professional advice from their mentors and learn more about what it is like to work in a business environment. Mentors build relationships with their mentees and reflect on their own experiences as professionals and leaders. More than half of all mentors in the program attended the event.

Troy Sedgwick, the CEO of REC Media, a Haskayne mentor, said attending the event allowed him to meet other mentors and reconnect with others in the advanced leadership community.

"Wise people seek the wise counsel of others, I find that mentoring is not only giving back, but it sort of sharpens my saw and reapplies my advice to others, allowing me to give back and continue to learn," said Sedgwick.

Sedgwick has been a mentor for over three years; despite his busy schedule, he finds the time to mentor students. Sedgwick explains that being a mentor allows him to apply his knowledge and live by his teachings.
