Haskayne Peer Network Program

New peer network program aims to enhance Haskayne student life

First year Haskayne students have the opportunity to be paired with senior students who will serve as their mentor for the academic year, thanks to the Haskayne Student Peer Network.

September 4, 2015 marked the official kick off for the new program with 20 Haskayne senior students attending the peer mentor training workshop. The workshop focused on students building the skills needed to be a good mentor and discussed the program’s expectations. Students were also provided with training from the Student’s Union Wellness Centre to better support mentees when experiencing stress during their first year in university.

A unique component of the program is the training and support peer mentors receive. A professional leadership coach will work alongside the peer mentors to hone their mentorship skills and obtain proper guidance during the year.

The Haskayne Peer Network is led by Paola Castillo, the VP Academic for the Haskayne Student Association in collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business. Although Paola did not have a formal peer mentor during her first year, her early involvement with the Commerce Undergraduate Society allowed her to meet someone who supported her when classes became difficult.

“The structure (of the Peer Network) provides a safe space and solid foundation to establish and build a great mentor and mentee bond. It will aid mentors in building upon their network and their leadership abilities while furthering their involvement around Scurfield Hall,” said Paola. “As for the mentees, it creates the opportunity for an easy transition and a chance to find their place.”

Peer mentees, mentors and the school benefit from this increased opportunity to engage. Networking events throughout the year offer the matches and other students the opportunity to connect with Haskayne life over coffee in the Nu-West Commons during lunch time. The first network is themed around funding to support increased student experience (including SEF sponsorship, SAF and the Haskayne Student Levy Fund).

Peer mentors and mentees met and were matched on September 22. A second intake to this program will start in January.
