The Haskayne Undergraduate Leadership Expedition

Discover the beauty in Alberta while uncovering the leader in yourself

In block week of fall 2016, there will be an opportunity for students to go on a five-day adventure into the Rockies. The Haskayne Leadership Expedition, a five-day backpacking expedition allows students to learn to lead varied aspects of this significant journey.

“The Leadership Expedition gave me the opportunity to explore the incredible natural beauty that Alberta has to offer while also exploring myself as a person. Through this invaluable experience I have seen tremendous growth in myself as well as my classmates on the course. I hope that all Haskayne students have the chance to experience what adventure education is all about,” says Shelly Kirkland, a third year Human Resources student at the Haskayne School of Business who was enrolled in this block week course in 2015.

The Expedition includes training for mountain travel safety and problem-solving challenges, group leadership and small group work. This course provides a foundation for key elements of advanced leadership, such as valuing people when achieving strong performance.

“The Leadership Expedition will take you to the ultimate classroom – the Rocky Mountains – to live leadership. You learn about yourself and others, and you develop a whole new level of confidence by leading and reflecting on your experiences, this is how you accelerate your development. It is through the way we work through challenge we discover courage and determination that we can draw on for the rest of our lives,” says Julian Norris, PhD Haskayne School of Business leadership instructor. This valuable week-long credit course is enabled by the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL).

Designed for students who are committed to both developing themselves as leaders and to playing a leadership role within Haskayne, the Leadership Expedition is a challenging and intense course. Applications are open to all undergraduate students, more information can be found here.

Fall 2016 offering is full we strongly encourage students to get involved in other Adventure Leadership Education opportunities, such as the Leadership Challenge Weekend or leadership martial arts dojo or drumming circles in Fall 2016… and to stay tuned to perhaps register for the course in Fall 2017.
