Women in Leadership, Jarislowsky Dinner and Discussion, and the Finance Workshop

Women in Leadership

On January 17, 2020, the first of the winter semester’s Jarislowsky events was held at the Calgary Central Library where Catherine Bell hosted a Q&A session about women in leadership with Haskayne MBA students. During this two-hour event, students got the chance to ask their questions and discuss issues in business today. Catherine guided the conversation and shared some of her own experiences and challenges. The event ended with the MBA students feeling inspired to continue their leadership journey.

Anne Uwagboe, an MBA at the Haskyane School of Business said, “Meeting Catherine was very enlightening and proof that women are excelling at the decision table and more women need to be in boardrooms. In order to get there, women need to help other women succeed.’’

Jarislowsky Dinner and Discussion

Back by popular demand, a second Dinner and Discussion for the 2019-2020 academic year occurred at the Petroleum Club in downtown Calgary on February 28, 2020, attended by more than 150 students and members of industry.  The panel, featuring Lori Bacon, CEO and owner of Swimco and Marcos Lopez, CEO of Shareworks by Morgan Stanley, discussed the topic “Stories of Awakening the Future of Alberta”. Following the panel discussion moderated by the Jarislowsky Fellows Catherine Bell and Art Korpach, guests took part in table conversations led by members of industry and shared their views and learnings from the discussion. After dinner, a Q&A of the panelists ensued with questions submitted by students. Jim Dewald, the dean of the Haskayne School of Business, concluded the event by thanking the outgoing Fellow, Catherine Bell her two-year term as Jarislowsky Fellow in Business Management at Haskayne’s CCAL. Catherine gifted her book, The Awakened Company, to all guests at the end of the dinner. Students stayed long after the event had concluded to network and share their thoughts on yet another successful Jarislowsky Dinner and Discussion.

Finance Workshop

The last of the winter Jarislowsky events was on March 6, 2020 where Art Korpach brought his 27 years of investment banking experience to a three-hour workshop. Ari Pandes, associate professor of finance at the Haskayne School of Business, introduced Art to the participating MBA students. The event started with conversations about current topics and trends in the finance sector. One of the hottest conversations was surrounding the current plunge in TSX and S&P500 where students shared opposing opinions about what a good investment strategy would be. After a half-hour debate, Art shared his suggestion and learnings from some of the major mergers and acquisitions deals he has experienced throughout his career. The event concluded with students working on an investment case with Art and sharing their perspectives on some leadership and financial challenges in the study.  High student engagement, the combination of soft and hard skills that were practiced and Art’s depth of experience were all factors that contributed to the success of this event.
