Hire Haskayne
Most Haskayne students hope for an engaging and exciting job upon graduation. The challenge is that these jobs often require experience. Fortunately, many students have the opportunity to build the necessary capabilities while still in school. Whether it is a summer position, an 8-month Co-op work term, or part-time employment, there are opportunities for all Haskayne students to gain the experience they need.
The Haskayne Career Centre is a valuable resource for students to connect with employers through many different avenues. The Career Centre provides job listings for Co-op positions, part-time, full-time, and contract work. Work experience gives students the chance to get their foot in the door with a variety of companies in different industries to learn more about their interests while gaining differentiating experience.
Accounting Co-op student Josh Vo appreciated the opportunity. “The Haskayne Co-op program helped me gain some real life experience that a classroom can’t teach and pushed me to learn about different roles outside of my position.”
Work experience helps students determine their next steps based on first-hand knowledge while helping students draw greater value from their course work.
“One of the major skills I learned on my 8-month work term at CCAL is the importance of self-reflection,” says Kenny Huynh, currently with the Haskayne Events Office. “It enables you to target the areas you want to develop and helps you to learn more about your own capabilities. I continue to use this skill today.
“There are many things you can’t learn in the classroom, such as office norms and professional behaviour in meetings.”
“It even helped me find greater success in my studies since work experience is easily transferred to a classroom,” Vo adds. For example, work experience is excellent training for teamwork as well as valuing the topics and technical skills learned in the classroom. Students experience the application and interview process, apply classroom knowledge, and build their networks – skills they will use beyond graduation.
The Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership is a strong supporter of the Co-op program. Students hired by CCAL join the team as full members. They are part of the decision-making process and have opportunities to support programs as well as develop and run projects. They bring valuable student perspective to the CCAL team and, importantly, they have opportunities for growth.
There are many employment opportunities available for Haskayne students through the Career Centre’s CareerLink.
