Prestigious list of highly cited researchers features 15 UCalgary academics

Professors in medicine, engineering, psychology and business recognized in Clarivate Web of Science Highly Cited Researchers list

The University of Calgary is thrilled to have 15 researchers recognized as having demonstrated significant and broad influence in their fields of research.

According to Clarivate Web of Science, each researcher selected has authored multiple highly cited papers which rank in the top one per cent by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade.

However, citation activity is not the sole selection indicator. A preliminary list based on citation activity is then refined using qualitative analysis and expert judgment. Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers are one in 1,000.

“This demonstrates not only that we have world-class researchers at UCalgary, but their work is having a tremendous impact around the globe in wide array of fields,” says Dr. William Ghali, vice-president, research at UCalgary. “We’re dedicated to harnessing the power of research and innovation to tackle society’s biggest challenges and it’s rewarding to see that work being recognized.”

Being a highly cited researcher is a commendable achievement in many research fields, and is part of a holistic view of research excellence. The University of Calgary signed the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) in 2021 and has committed to inclusive and responsible approaches to research assessment. This includes relying on robust tools and approaches to evaluating the quality and impact of research and scholarship. The university recognizes the merit of diverse forms of research and scholarship outputs, as well as a broad range of qualitative impact indicators such as influence on policy and practice. Article-level bibliometrics are one piece of this holistic approach.

The Web of Science (WoS) database annually indexes documents published in thousands of journals, covering many areas of research. Publications indexed by WoS are considered to include the core scientific literature. However, the database coverage is not inclusive, especially in social sciences, humanities and arts or in languages other than English. As a result, publications in journals that are not indexed in WoS as well as citations to these publications are excluded when identifying the list of highly cited researchers. Disciplinary citation norms can also lead to greater emphasis on scholars in more highly cited sub-disciplines. Considering the context and limitations of bibliometric indicators is a necessary part of a transparent and responsible research assessment approach. Learn more
