Student Experiences Fund

Learn about extra curricular activities that can help you stand out

Canadian Career Services managers agree that extracurricular activities are a non-negotiable part of a degree for personal and professional development. Said a different way: How will just taking classes, doing homework and studying help you stand out?

“Students that take advantage of exchange programs, Co-operative Education, or who travel to compete in case competitions, often show a higher level of maturity and autonomy. This is attractive to potential employers. Plus, they are building on the skills learned in class and have great stories to tell,” said Kimberley Dart, Manager of the Haskayne Career Centre at the Haskayne School of Business.

Extra-curricular funding in Haskayne is dedicated to enhancing student learning experiences by providing financial support for learning opportunities outside the classroom. It is intended to maximize the number and types of opportunities available to students by reducing the financial barriers to participation. Students have applied for a variety of activities through the Haskayne Student Experience Fund, ranging from case competitions and conferences to group travel and student exchanges. The fund is jointly supported by three industry-funded Haskayne research centers, the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business, the Hunter Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies.

"The SEF offers unfathomable opportunities and the financial resources necessary to assist our goal of becoming well-rounded business leaders. Seizing these opportunities is the differentiator – competing in the Harvard International Consulting competition was an experience that elevated my college experience from satisfactory to extraordinary," says Mark Lee, Haskayne School of Business student and HICC 2015 participant.

Students have travelled to a variety of countries such as England, Spain, Germany and the United States; participating in initiatives like the Berg Cup Case Competition, Harvard International Consulting Competition and volunteering with Global Brigades and the Green Biz Forum. Every student should know about extracurricular funding as there are so many opportunities that could be eligible for SEF funding. It is time to take your learning outside the classroom and engage in an experience that you'd remember for the rest of your life – apply for the Student Experience Fund today.
