UCalgary is partnering with The City to create a concept plan for the City-owned Foothills Athletic Park and university-owned McMahon Stadium lands that will guide future planning. This work is in the early stages and will be achieved through a design process supported by technical studies along with public and stakeholder engagement.

The mission of the project is to create a vision and plan for future land use that integrates into and enhances surrounding areas, meets Calgarians’ recreation goals, aligns with the university’s academic and research needs, and explores the significant economic development opportunity of this site.

When The City posed the idea of creating a concept plan, UCalgary was keen to be involved. The Foothills Athletic Park and McMahon Stadium Lands are heavily used right now and there is incredible potential for the site in the future. This is an excellent opportunity to create an integrated plan to ensure we are aligned and working toward shared goals that will meet the needs of our community.

The future of McMahon Stadium itself is outside the scope of this project. There are no plans to redevelop McMahon Stadium as part of this work. The Foothills + McMahon concept plan will be useful to the university and McMahon Stadium Society as future plans unfold.

Public engagement on the Foothills + McMahon concept plan is underway now. The university community is encouraged to visit the concept plan website to learn more about the project, share feedback about the site, and sign up for updates. A design process known as a charette will be held virtually in April 2021 to collect input into the design concept for the site. Following the charette, there will be public engagement on a draft concept plan.
